Global health is a type of public health study. It's basically a mixture of public health and medical anthropology... It goes over the history of health, health around the world, world health solutions, etc. It's very relevant to public health, and is a good major for somebody looking to do public health, but it'd be nice if we had a more legit undergraduate program for public health.

That's awesome! Go with that one unless you really like Mass...or really can't afford it or something. I need to start touring graduate schools. Oh dear. Back to college touring...and there's only one school that has a program in state! And unlike the east coast, west coast states are giant, so going a state over is hours of driving/flying. Mehh.

Neurofeedback = EEG Biofeedback. We can use neuro/biofeedback to help clients understand how their brain/body works, which allows them to alter their approach and achieve the desired result. For example, if you were to be hooked up to a device that registered your heart rate, you would know if your heart rate increased due to feeling anxious. After seeing that feedback, you could alter your approach (ex. deep breathing, muscle relaxation, positive thoughts) to decrease your heart rate, which is a desirable result. With neurofeedback, your brain uses visual, audio, and tactile feedback to understand what it needs to do differently to achieve the desired result. For example, someone with ADHD may watch a movie while I monitor their EEG brainwaves on a computer screen. When the brain is working properly, the movie's picture is great, the audio is at a normal level, and the object the client is holding (generally a teddy bear, since we work with lots of kids) vibrates. When the brain isn't working properly, the picture becomes "foggy," the audio fades or stops altogether, and the bear doesn't vibrate. Your brain registers all this, and it craves the positive feedback, so it will try different things until something works, and the picture/audio is restored and the object vibrates again. Over time, it will "train" itself to resort to the proper way of working more often than not, leading to the desired result. In the cases of ADHD, neurofeedback could help with the symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. The same can be said for many mental and physical illnesses (neurofeedback was initially used for epilepsy). So it's very exciting, and I enjoy combining my traditional therapeutic skills (there's a lot of parent training and psychoeducation involved) with the use of technology. =D

Chemistry shouldn't be a problem. As long as you took the minimal amount of sciences, it should be fine. A BS in Public Health with a focus in Epi really doesn't need a whole lot of chemistry anyway; you MIGHT have to take one, but I doubt it. Don't worry too much about bachelors degrees; grad schools is where they get picky about what classes you had to have taken. And feel sorry for me, I'm not in a public health degree. We don't have one here. I'm in Global Health, which is similar to public health and often there are MPHs with focuses in Global Health, but I really haven't taken any "pre-public health" classes. I'm just winging it.

The schools sound awesome! This seems corny, but listen to your heart. If I would have listened to logic/what my parents wanted, I would have gone to Northern Arizona University and been miserable. NAU sucks. Hahaha! But when I visited ASU, I fell in love, and came here. Go to the school that you can most see yourself happy at. Price and proximity to parents matter, but it's secondary compared to happiness.

    About me
Hey all! My name is Dez, and I am a 27 year old who just graduated with my Masters in Public Health. So I basically just entered the "real world" and have to be an "adult." Ew.

On any given day if I'm not here you'll find me napping, sitting in therapy, or watching something on Netflix. I'm trying to do this thing called "finding a hobby," so feel free to pass along your favorite books and TV shows.

I have an interest in sexual health, especially contraceptives, the prevention of sexually transmitted infections as well as HPV and the vaccine in particular. I stand with Planned Parenthood and similar reproductive health organizations. I also have an interest in vaccines.

I'm still basically trying to figure everything out myself, but feel free to say hello. If I don't answer right away, rest assured that I will when I get a chance! :D

I did a risk assessment with one of my group therapy clinicians the other day and it told us that I was high risk for suicide. I already knew that was going to be a thing. My mental health has been bad lately. The clinician let the crisis team know and they called me, but I was able to convince them I was fine.

I was supposed to go for a medical test on the sixth. They had me go off of my reflux medication to do it, and then the day before the test they called and said they made a...

My mixed episode turned into a severe depressive episode, also with a lot of anxiety.

I haven't showered in a week. I am going to tomorrow only because I have an MRI and I don't want them to get upset with me for being dirty. If not I'd probably push it off even longer. I can go to the gym just fine but showering is a nightmare and I don't know why. I never have issues showering when I'm depressed.

I've been self harming regularly, almost daily. It's nothing severe...

As the title says, if this keeps up, I will end up back in the hospital.

My mood has been getting worse lately, especially in the month of June. I had a lot of ups and downs despite being on a ton of medications. I have been irritable and snapping at my parents for stupid things like the fact that my Dunkin order was wrong. I also had impulsive spending to the point that I had $6.14 left in my bank account by the end of the month. I have also been self harming and my suicidal thoughts...

I followed a journal prompt asking you to write a letter to your future self. I decided to write a letter to me five years from now. I kind of like how it came out so I am posting it here too. Here goes:

Dear Me 5 Years From Now,

I honestly didn't expect that you would live this long, so congratulations I guess. I hope you don't have any permanent damage from any more suicide attempts that happened between 4/12/24 and now. Maybe you're finally not feeling as suicidal...

I started writing this and then something happened and it deleted itself, so I guess I'll try to remember what I was going to say.

I was doing relatively well for a few weeks. I really was. I hadn't been self harming and had generally been feeling okay. But then it crashed again and the depression and anxiety are back with a vengeance.

This weekend I was very depressed. I spent a lot of Saturday isolating by myself and was in bed a lot. I went to bed around 7:30, 8:00...
