In chat you don't have to say anything, you can only read the conversation if you aren't comfortable in joining in or you can join in and talk to whoever is in the chat room at the time. There is always the option of talking via Instant Message (IM) in chat where you are in the chat room but can privately talk to one person if you don't want to talk to everyone at the same time or if you just want to talk to one person.
