I'm starting a new college class and I'm scared to start class because I have a learning disability and I was told this professor is very hard and I have to take it, I can't get out of this because not a lot teach this class. I don't want to fail this class. I am having a very hard time and feel I don't want to be alive anymore, I want to find a way to kill myself and I haven't told anyone about this. I think of ways to do this and I will not have to take this class. I'm sorry this is a stupid problem, I don't know what is wrong with me.

Hey,

It can definitely be scary when professors are very hard. This isn't a stupid problem at all!

I think that before you do anything, you should talk to the professor during their office hours. You can let them know that you have a learning disability and are afraid but really want to succeed in this class. You can ask the professor to help you develop a game plan to help you be more successful in the class. I would also continue to utilize the professor's office hours during the duration of the class, even before you get to a point where you are very stuck. You can make sure with the professor that you are still on the right track and understanding the material before things become too big of a problem. Professors are more willing to work with students when they show up and make an effort, so having them put a face to your name can really help. They'll be more likely to help you find ways to pass if you are proactive from the start and not waiting until last minute.

You can also email other students in the class to see if they would like study partners. If the class is as hard as other people are saying it is, they would probably appreciate having someone to study with, so it's beneficial to both of you. You can also ask the person who told you the class is very hard for pointers on how to pass the class.

Does your school have a disability resource center or something similar? It would be the place you get accommodations for classes. Talk to them and let them know why you are afraid. You can let them know that this is negatively affecting your mental health, even if you don't go into full detail about how you want to kill yourself. They have probably heard that from students in the past, either with this class or another class that is hard, and have some pointers on how to get through.

Think of your ultimate goal of completing your degree and getting a career using this degree in the future. You will be so proud of yourself for sticking with it even when things get hard. When you are doing what you love one day you will find that it is all worth it and this class won't even matter anymore. It's just one bump in the road, but I can tell you are a hard worker and that will go a long way.

You can do this!
Dez
