In some areas of the world it’s actually more common to have tampons without applicators and it’s harder to find ones with them. The plastic applicators aren’t environmentally friendly. Just make sure to wash your hands before inserting a tampon, applicator or not.

The major benefit is that as long as it does not have a plastic applicator it is more environmentally friendly. Some have biodegradable applicators or no applicator at all in place of the plastic ones that a lot of regular tampons have. There are regular tampons that do come with biodegradable applicators or no applicators as well though. It's also debated that they use fewer chemicals in their production, but regular tampons are still safe as long as you practice good hygiene.
