First off, DEFINITELY ask first. You don't know if it's something she's comfortable with, and if not it could easily go downhill. So please, ask her first.
As to whether or not people think it's gross, to each their own. Some people like that stuff, some don't. For example, I used to date a guy who loved anal stuff, and my current boyfriend despises it (thank god!), so we don't do any kind of anal stimulation because it's not what we're into. Does that mean it's gross or abnormal? No; it's just a personal preference.
