Dune is my favourite book series of all time. Personally I felt like Frank Herbert was just warming up on the first book, it wasn't my favourite of the series and is more like typical sci-fi. He really comes into his own for the sequels where the story and plot becomes far more complex and intriguing.

God Emperor of Dune (#4) was my favourite, and Heretics of Dune (#5) and Chapterhouse: Dune (#6) were incredible in a bizarre weird way. My favourite part of the series is how the books spread over 10,000 years and they show how different events and decisions impact on future politics, religion, science, technology. I won't spoil anything but there are some huge plot twists along the way and you don't figure out some of the biggest mysteries until the very end.

Unfortunately the author died before finishing the series, some people consider the last chapter that Frank wrote in book #6 to be one of the biggest plot cliffhangers of all time!! However his son wrote books 7 & 8 to wrap it up based on his father's notes and also wrote 6 prequels which explain some backstories which were okay too, not written as well, but give further information which frames the original stories if you're interested in learning more about the history.

I'm currently re-reading the series and on Heretics at the moment.
