Who Shushed You? -

Was it the ones whose arms
Placed you in the cradle,
And let the steady motion
Soothe you in a way they never could?
Was it a ghost of the past
Who has long since faded,
But whose form hangs like a shadow
Over every waking moment?
Was it the ones who held you down
As you thrashed and screamed,
The echoes in your head
Driving you to insanity?
Was it the chorus of voices
Who ridiculed your body,
And told you to become smaller
If you want their love?
Was it the boys
Who fondled, groped, and used you,
And took advantage of the fact
You didn't know what true intimacy felt like?
Was it the prince
Who made you feel worthy,
But taught you
Not every fairy tale has a happy ending?
Was it the monster
Who fed on your soul,
And sucked the life out of you
Until you were a mere husk of a being?
Was it the goddess you worshipped
Who filled your days with magic,
Until she abandoned you in the cold
And left you to fend for yourself?
The binds on your wrist unwind
The mystery unravels
And you come undone inside
As the truth settles in the dusk.
