This wasn't a sudden response to a single incident, this was a reaction to deep-rooted, long-term systemic issues that have been ignored or dismissed by those with the power to fix the system. If those in charge won't address the issues after calm conversation and peaceful protests, they shouldn't be surprised when those calling for justice and equality are forced to escalate.
