Coronaviruses do cause a range of other diseases, but this particular type (a novel coronavirus known as SARS-CoV-2) is what causes COVID-19 (which is the name of the disease - coronavirus disease 2019). I agreed with this. There are 4 common strains, and two other novel strains.
I think my only main reason to call it COVID-19 right now, is because of how many people don't understand that there ARE other strains of Coronavirus that are not severe. Because most people if you tell them "I have coronavirus" Everyone assumes its COVID-19 and this big horrible thing, when the other strains are still around and it may cause a lot of unnecessary panic, because the common strains don't have actual names, it letters and numbers. At least that is my reasoning in my head.
My boyfriend is a medical lab technician, so he works in a hospital running different tests. And when we get chit-chatting about his work, he will mention what the common viruses he sees that day. For example he was mentioning that they are seeing almost no positive flu tests. But a rise in some of the common coronavirus, and another virus.
