I believe it's about your intent and emotions at the moment. When I was 14-16, I picked my fingers so badly that I had to pour anti-septic on them to prevent infections.

This is actually the thing I suggested to another user not too long ago, but have since found out that is the worst thing to do


In that time period, between the ages of 14 and 16, I was feeling a severe amount of anxiety and unknown/undiagnosed depression. I never told anyone, because there was such a huge stigma against it all around me (and if you even cut yourself a teeny tiny bit, gossip be damned!) so I'm sure I got spoken about about my hands. I always covered them up with long sleeves, even in the summertime. Still pull my sleeves over my hands today.

But anyways, it's about the intent and feeling at the time you're doing it.
