Hey Jess,

I'm no expert, but I am a high school dance teacher, so I spend quite a lot of time working on costumes. A couple of suggestions... first, definitely consider getting some sewing scissors if you can (like these). If you try to cut the hat with regular scissors that have already been used on paper (or anything except fabric, really), they're going to be too dull from their prior usage, and it's going to make it difficult for you to make a clean cut. Secondly, rather than sewing afterwards, I would recommend Liquid Seam Sealant/Fray Check (I use this). Its way less effort, dries completely clear, and makes sure that your fabric won't fray.
