Ready or not
They came marching in
They pulled her out of,
her hiding spot
They said she had to try harder
To be normal and socialize
Like all the other normal kids
(She was not ready)

Ready or not
They came marching in
Yanked her blanket off, her
cold slender body
Shivering
Grabbed her by the ear
Dragged her out of the house
And onto the school bus
(She was not ready)

Ready or not
They came marching in
Took away her comfort toys
The only things that let her feel safe
Gave her math worksheets
And books to read
(That went in from one ear and out the next)
About some little house on the prairie
And some girl named Sarah,
Plain and tall
They gave her a pen and paper
And told her,
She had to write about what she did over the summer
And how she is going to have a clean slate
When the new school year begins
(She was not ready...but that never mattered to anyone)
They said she was a big girl now
And big girls don't cry
Only babies cry

So when she graduated college
She was ready
To retire from life
And spent the next years
Crying in bed
And her body became big fat and ugly
But inside she was a little girl

Trying to wish herself to disappear
Maybe if she closed her eyes
and wished hard enough
She could disappear into the white walls surrounding her

But she was no magician
So she spent her years hiding
Because she wasn't ready
And they came marching in anyway
Without a care about how she felt
