As those above me have mentioned, it all depends on you and your friend.

I talk to some of my friends nearly every day on Facebook, by text messages and phone, while others I see whenever we can catch up.

I personally feel it doesn't matter if my friends and I talk everyday because we always have something to talk about when we do catch up face to face.
