That's another point my mom makes a lot with me. She works at an elementary school where they basically go in at like 7:30, 8:00 and don't get out until about 4 PM. It's basically babysitting the kids for them and that's about it. If a kid doesn't want to learn, they're not going to learn, but it's certainly convenient to the parents.

I never got a chance to read the entire thread until now, and this post in particular reminds me of this excerpt from
Fahrenheit 451. "I plunk the children in school nine days out of ten. I put up with them when they come home three days a month; it's not bad at all. You heave them into the 'parlor' and turn the switch. It's like washing clothes: stuff laundry in and slam the lid."
