Is Dating Your Friend's Ex Ever Okay? - June 8th 2011, 04:20 PM

Okay, so I really like this guy that I've been really good friends with for about 3 years. He likes me back. Everything would be perfect if he wasn't my best friends ex, but she's moved on and been with alot of people since him, as it's been over a year and they were only together for 10 days- 2 weeks and it wasn't serious. If I get her permission to date him, will it ruin our friendship..?

Hey LiveLifeZara,

If she has moved on, then it's most likely alright to date him. They are exes for a reason, so, I wouldn't see the problem with it. She isn't his anymore, therefore, I don't think you really need permission. Not to mention, you mentioned that she has been with other people since they were together. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask her about it, but I wouldn't see why it would be a problem. A good friend would want you to see you happy with someone, so, if she ever said no, then she's only being selfish because they only went out for little time anyway. It probably wasn't that serious and it shouldn't ruin the friendship. I honestly say, good luck to you and that guy! <3 Best wishes.

Zara,

I understand your concern here, but if you get your friends permission then I see no reason why it would be of any problem to her. If you say she has moved on, then it's likely she'll be okay with you seeing her ex as long as he makes you happy, so as long as it's okay with her and you and this guy are happy, I see no reason why it would ruin your friendship. Good luck!

Take care,
Hollie.

ahaha ive seen this so many times. Shes going to say its fine and that she doesnt care but its going to be in the back of her head always and if anything ever happens like a fight i know for a fact shell bring it up and call out how messed up it is just to make you look bad. She says it wont bother her, It will later and shell realize it. shell tell your friends, "what kind of person goes out with their best friends Ex?" 2 weeks or 6 months she still was with him before you. just letting you know what ive seen over and over.

Hey Zara,
For me, I would never date a friends ex. It's not exactly my thing to have someone else's sloppy seconds.
But, if you get your friends permission to date him, then I would go for it. If she gets upset with you, then you just have to tell her, "Hey! You gave me permission to do it.".

Re: Is Dating Your Friend's Ex Ever Okay? - June 8th 2011, 08:29 PM

I think it would be totally okay.

There have been times (more than once) where a friend liked my ex, I actually encouraged her to go for it because I knew they would be a lot better together than he and I were. So I was happy to see them together.

I guess with some people it depends on how serious it was too. Like where friends won't even consider a guy because their friend likes them and sometimes that gets way too confusing.

Anyways! I would say it's okay

It's been over a year and it doesn't sound very serious if it was only 1/2 weeks. Just talk to your friend about it and see what they say although I don't see why they wouldn't be okay with it and go for it.

It all depends on how you, your friend and the guy feel about it. I have a friend who happens to be a girl that has gone through alot of my close friends. She tried coming onto me and flirting, but I pushed away because I feel dishonorable about dating a friends ex. It's just my moral code. As long as the moral code of everyone that is involved is OK with it, it should be fine.

I think it's wrong to date your friends ex, however, ten days doesn't really count as being in a relationship so I wouldn't consider them ex's.

This ^^.
Relationships which last shorter than a month don't really count in my opinion. I don't believe you can get to that relationship phase properly in a few weeks. If your friends says it's okay, then in this situation I would go for it. I basically have My last ex dated a friend of mine for a few weeks, and she just laughed at me when I checked that it was ok for me to go out with him xD
As long as no one's feelings are getting hurt, I see no problem with it.

i would usually say absolutely no, it's not ok to date your friends ex.. however, being together 10 days/2 weeks doesn't really constitute a 'relationship' so it's probably ok. talk to your friend, see what she says.

If they have moved and if it was nothing serious, then I think its okay. But if he ever made her cry, then I don't think its a good idea. I would check with her to make sure she won't mind because you don't want to lose a friend over a guy.

thats a hard on it all kinda depends on the case.. You don't wanna lose your best friend and that is understandable, but she only dated him for a two weeks you said and she has moved on.. So I really don't see the problem unless she is just gonna be really bitchy about it but maybe you should sit down and talk to her about it and see what happens you really can't help who you like
