Online Dating Sites -
May 16th 2011, 12:09 AM
Alright -
So, what are your opinions on online dating sites?
Hypothetical situation: Two people meet on an online dating site. They attend the same university. They met on the dating site but then they continued to chat via Skype, texting, etc. Then, they met up in person and pretty much start going on dates and stuff.
Sketchy or no? Thoughts?

Nope, not sketchy. Me and my girlfriend met on here. I understand its not a dating site but its still similar. I think if you skype, talk, and trust the person enough it would be perfectly fine.
I don't like the ideas of dating sites though because for me, people only want to "get some". Not my style.

It's not like the two would be dating online - on the site or anything. It's more like, they met online and then their relationship went solely offline - except when they're chatting on Skype or something. They only MET online, not online dating.

Wouldn't call it sketchy. Probably at least as safe as picking someone up at a party, and you're more likely to have things in common.
I wouldn't use one, though. Maybe if they became more normalised, but at the moment the quality of girl is quite low on average, and the few hot ones can simply pick and choose from hundreds of suitors. Admittedly that isn't so far removed from real life, but the trends are exacerbated. I guess if I'd moved to a new city it'd be a quick way to find some company, but I'd rather meet people the old-fashioned way.

Not sketchy. That's not even remotely sketchy.
However, I would never use an online dating site, or any kind of dating on the internet. I prefer to meet people in person, which I could do on an online dating site, but I've always taught myself to be safe and not get involved with anyone I've met on the internet, since I don't know that person's true colors.

Both my parents met their current partners through online dating sites. For me it was a bit dodgy in both cases, especially seeing as my mum put our house up for sale so she could move in with her new guy after only months of knowing each other. I think online dating is okay, as long as you don't take extremely stupid risks like my mother. I love her and all that, but when she was gonna sell OUR house for the sake of a guy she'd met on the internet and known two minutes I wanted to slap her.

Isn't this the same as the last thread?
If the two people start dating offline and have a good thing going, there's nothing wrong with their relationship. Why would it be sketchy just because they've met online?

Dating sites are sketchy. In fact, it may narrow down the pool of potential partners who have things in common with you.

i met my ex on a dating website. we talked for 9 days, then met up, then later that night on msn, i asked her out. the 6 months we were together were great. it was my first time meeting someone who i'd met online, and yes i was nervous, but we also got talking for those 9 days (quite a lot) and it helped, because we knew stuff about each other, and felt more comfortable when we met up, especially as we both can be very shy. so no, i dont think theres anything wrong with it
