How to make a calming jar
by Cassie (Cassiopeia.)
Calming jars are a do-it-yourself craft that is sparkly and fun for people of all ages. The colorful glittery solution can serve as a calming substitute for people struggling with the use of unhealthy coping mechanisms such as self-harm. With the help of a few materials, people can create a calming jar of their own in just a few minutes.
Materials needed
Old clothing (optional)
A mason jar
Boiling water
A spoon
Glitter
Glitter glue
Food dye (optional)
Strong liquid glue (optional)
Note: It's recommended to wear old clothing (especially with the use of food dye) in case any spilling occurs.
Step one: Carefully pour boiling water into the jar but be sure to stop about an inch or two from the top of the jar so there is room to stir and shake later on.
Step two: Start by putting around two tablespoons of glitter glue into the jar. This can be done by pouring the glue onto the spoon and then submerging it into the water. Mix this until the water and glitter glue create a solution.
Step three: Add in a tablespoon of glitter at a time and mix it in the water. A minimum of a tablespoon of glitter is needed for every two tablespoons of glitter glue.
Step four: Repeat steps two and three until there is a half inch layer of glitter on the bottom.
Step five: Add a drop or two of food dye to the solution to add a pop of color (a little bit of dye goes a long way).
Step six: When satisfied with the jar, use a strong liquid glue to keep the jar permanently shut.
Step seven: Let it cool and enjoy!

The jar can be made in multiple sizes and colors. A large or medium sized one can fit nicely in a bedroom or a main living space while a small one can be useful to have when traveling. The jar does not have to be made with a mason jar, but a lot of people prefer them because they're easily accessible. It should be made with a glass jar or bottle that holds water. Shake the jar when stressed and feel calmer while watching the glitter slowly sink to the bottom. Not only is this a useful coping skill, but it can serve as a decoration too.
