What are the odds that I'm pregnant? - March 12th 2012, 04:33 AM

Well, I'm scared. Hopefully someone can help me!
About a week ago, my boyfriend and I had sex for the first time. I lost my virginity to him. We've had intercourse twice since then, and all three times were unprotected, although he was able to withdraw before ejaculating inside me. He's eighteen and I'm seventeen.
The problem is that now my boyfriend and I are scared to death that I'm pregnant. We know that the odds are low, but until I can take a pregnancy test, we just want to know what exactly the probability is.
I know that I wasn't ovulating any of the times we had sex, he was able to pull out well before ejaculating all three times, and there was little, if any pre-ejaculate. I realize that pre-ejaculate itself can contain plenty of sperm, particularly if a man has ejaculated before that day, which my boyfriend did, but he's fairly certain that he urinated in between these ejaculations, which I understand helps rid him of excess sperm.
The only reason we're uneasy about the threat of a potential pregnancy is that my period is at least a day late, and I don't feel it coming on like I often do when I'm about to start.
I realize that stress can make your period late, and I am certainly stressed! I've never really kept track of it before, so I don't know if this is 100% normal or not.
Thank you!

By the time your period is actually late, you can usually take a home pregnancy test and it will be accurate. I suggest you do that if you don't get your period within a couple of days. To prevent further worry in the future, maybe go to Planned Parenthood and get birth control or talk to your boyfriend about using condoms. We can't really say what the actual probability of you getting pregnant is. But it seems like you know your cycle and if you're fairly sure that you weren't ovulating, I would think that you're not pregnant. However, I do still think that if you don't get your period soon, you should test.

Hope everything works out! Take care.

Hey there!

Firstly, you mentioned that you had unprotected sex about a week ago. You won't be able to take a test for another two weeks. Two weeks is the standard time before you can take a test and for it to be accurate. Just because you CAN test after two weeks doesn't mean it's going to give you an accurate result. Here is a list of things for you to remember when testing:
  • Buy pregnancy tests in bulk. Most of them have 2 or more in the package, and I highly suggest buying one of those. If one test comes out negative, and you're still worried, you have that extra test(s) to take another one.
  • Check expiration dates before buying. In my experience, the date is on the side of the box where you open the packaging. If the date has since passed, inform an associate of the store so they can remove any other tests that are expired, and find you one that isn't.
  • IMPORTANT: Read the directions thoroughly. You don't want to miscaculate, or do the test wrong giving you a wrong answer.
  • Take the test FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, meaning when you first urinate after waking up. The hCG hormone, or pregnancy hormone, is most potent in the morning, giving you the best, more accurate result.

Secondly, stressing out about this isn't going to help. You'll need to relax. There is ALWAYS a chance of pregnancy when you have sex, especially unprotected, but even with protection too. Nothing is 100% except abstinence. With your particular situation, you'll need to relax. It's only been a week so you won't be experiencing any pregnancy symptoms just yet.

Your best bet is to wait another week or two and buying a test, if only just to ease your mind. Next time you decide to have sex, use protection so you don't have to worry about this kind of thing.

If it was your first time recently, that could be why your period is delayed as well. Also, rough intercourse could make you have a period early, or delay it, or even skip it entirely.

Shannon covered the pregnancy tests pretty well :P
