Strange effect of birth control - April 26th 2022, 10:32 AM

Hi everyone,
I've been taking birth control pill for a month now. It contains:

2 mg chlormadinone acetate
and
0.03 mg ethinylestradiol.

I specifically wanted a pill with an antiandrogen (chlormadinone acetate is one), as I have problems with too high androgen, which may or may not be a result of NuvaRing that I used to use in the past.

Right now I have noticed that my skin and hair got more greasy. It's a surprise, since from an antiandrogenic substance I would expect either no changes, or less greasiness.

Do you think it's a cause for concern? Or perhaps that's too early to say (I used only one package of the pill so far)?

Thanks for your answers.

Hello,
I think one entire package is enough to see the effects. Maybe it's a reaction of your body with that pill. In this cases, you should call your doctor and tell him/her about that. Maybe a change of pill is the best.

Hormonal changes like birth control, pregnancy, your menstrual cycle and menopause can cause changes in your hair. Additionally, as a teenager, your hair may be changing in texture and oiliness as you develop. I can't pinpoint the cause, but as the previous user stated, talking to your doctor about the side effects you're having is great. You can change birth control, or at least get some answers of what might be happening and make a plan.

I specifically wanted to hear your thoughts about why the hair and skin seems more greasy since this drug has (or should have) an antiandrogenic effect.

I am not a teenager anymore so it's likely connected to the pills, not puberty.

I have a bit limited contact with a doctor right now, as I moved some time ago and I don't have access to my usual doctor anymore. I have had an appointment with a different doctor here on the spot already, but it was an awful experience and I'm definitely not going back. It will likely take some time for me to find a suitable new doctor here, so I guess I will just wait through another package of the pills.

I had a lot of hormone problems after using NuvaRing for almost a year, so I was super hesitant about using hormonal contraception again. However, after evaluating my choices I decided that it was my only option, so I wanted to choose a different substance hoping it will have less of an impact on my organism.

I take birth control, but with different hormone supplements. It does cause your skin and hair to get greasy, so it'd be a good idea to strengthen your hygiene. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about this; but try to find something that works for you and doesn't cause any unwanted side effects — for example, rash or peeling skin.

Do you think it'd be possible to look into getting an OB/GYN or a primary care doctor? As I said, this is more an issue with natural hormones in your system than the birth control themselves.
