16 and a half and no period. - December 20th 2013, 02:41 AM

I'm 16 and a half and have yet to have my first period. Should I be worried? I have a fairly low BMI but it isn't awful and my body weight percentage is completely normal. I do have an eating disorder but I manage it decently and do eat a sustainable amount most days. I do get high amounts of stress and frustration though. Could this be stopping it? My mother got hers when she was about 14. Is it normal to have my period be this late?

Hey Cassie!

Most girls get their first periods between the ages of 8-15, or even younger or older. Everyone is different and a lot of things factor into it. Things like stress, depression and such can have an affect. It is possible that your ED is affecting it, but if you're eating enough and everything is okay as far as health wise, you'll be alright. If it makes you feel any better, my friend's mom was almost seventeen when she got hers.

If more time passes and you don't get your period, maybe you can talk to your mom and get checked out to make sure you don't have any physical conditions.

I hope things work out for you.

Cassie covered most of what it could be, and that every girl is different and gets them at different times.

If you are really worried about this, talk to your mom, or maybe even a doctor. Better to be safe than worried all the time about it.

I hope this helped, don't keep stressing over it.

My nan was 18 when she had hers. Some people are just later. If it is really worrying you then you could ask a doctor.

As the others have said, it's different for everyone. Your BMI could come into play as to why your period hasn't come yet, but it could be a number of things, all completely normal.

If you're really concerned that it could be something serious, just check with your doctor. Chances are it'll come eventually though!
