You may bleed for a while after pregnancy only because you haven't had a period for 9 months. The bleeding may be heavy, it may not. It all depends on the person. Everyone is different in terms of periods, how heavy they are and how long they'll last. Just make sure you wear a pad instead of a tampon, that way you can still heal after giving birth.

As Shannon said, it mostly depends on your body. Although, the majority of women start their period 6-8 weeks after birth (if not breastfeeding) or once they ween their baby from breast feeding. However, this does not stand true for every woman.

Also, most women say their period is a bit heavier and lasts longer. But many others say nothing changed. Some say they no longer have cramps. So, there is no way to really say how it will go.

If you have a heavy flow, just be sure to change out the pad as soon as it gets filled. Do not use a tampon, as Shannon stated, so you can heal.

If you happen to have cramps or severe cramps (some women do before and after childbirth), and you are breastfeeding, then speak to your doctor about some pain killers (Tylenol, etc) you can take safely.
