Unhappy Mental health Appointment - December 6th 2024, 12:19 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

So yesterday I was at my psychitrist appointment and she told might I might have AuDHD(Autism + ADHD), and my mom was fine during the appointment, but when she got home with me started yelling. I got really depressed and over stimulated so I shut down and she goes "Oh my god why didn't you show this during the appointment!?" Like idk maybe cus I didn't feel so shitty???

IDk what to do

Hey,

I'm sorry this happened to you. It's not your fault that you possibly have these diagnoses. There are are a lot of different factors that contribute, but none of it is caused by you. I hope that knowing that you may have this diagnosis allows you to seek treatment and support both in school and in your personal life.

If you're not feeling shitty in the moment (such as at your psychiatrist appointment), then it makes sense that you're not going to shut down or act depressed. I'd 100% get triggered if someone started yelling at me about something like this, or in general really. Try your best to be honest and open with how you are feeling when you DO see your psychiatrist of course.

Can you ask your mom if there is another way she can communicate besides yelling? Let her know you want to be receptive to what she has to say but yelling can cause you to shut down. Maybe you can suggest a healthier way for her to communicate with you.

Best of luck,
Dez

Hi, I have autism and ADHD, and once the right help and support is in place, whether thats OT, DBT, or other therapies, or medication, it does get easier.
I find that when I feel shitty that doing something I enjoy or that I find calming helps me, so for me that could be something like watching my favourite film, engaging in one of my special interests, doing some colouring or getting out in nature.
Maybe you could explain to your mum about 'masking' and how in social situations due to masking you can appear to have everything going steady and functioning, but inside it's a different story all together.
