My English homework makes me LOL - February 22nd 2012, 05:18 PM

Here's a quote from one of my essays

Quote:
If Jim loses his job he would have to claim benefits which would be detrimental to the state.
I've never used to the word "detrimental" in my life

It makes me LOL.

I use it more often than I care to admit.

Me either. Do you tend to be more formal when you write like I do?

I use big words when I'm writing letters/essays as well whereas I never use them when I'm speaking. I read it back and think; "That really doesnt sound like me at all!"

I used to right click my words and click on the synonomnom thing I can't spell so it'd suggest more impressive words for me to use in my essays.

Re: My English homework makes me LOL - February 22nd 2012, 11:24 PM

I'm a bit like that. Ever since having to use it like 7 times in an essay for history (and I took history twice so it's like 14 times) I've been subconsciously using "lesser of two evils" (or something similar, now that I try to think of it, I can't remember it) whenever I can.

I'm terrible at essay writing. I use big interesting words when I speak and as soon as I try and write something intelligent they disappear and I sound like a twit.

I'm actually the opposite. I read them and think, "Finally I'm able to compile all of my thoughts on a topic and not get weird looks for using big words! Yay!" I'm such a dork. Oh noes!
