Oh Uncle, you silly Uncle,
You tell me what I do in life is
useless,
worthless,
pointless.
That the degree I earned is taking me nowhere.
For the last three years since I graduated, the constant put downs
From you and many others
got even worse.
Then you decide you want to give me a graduation gift
After having skipped me between your other nieces and nephews.
Even though only three days ago,
you were being critical about how my life is going.
Oh silly Uncle,
You called me on the phone to ask me if I will wear earrings
You plan to buy me earrings but you warn me that I must wear them
I do not need earrings, especially not expensive ones!
I do not need jewelry!
Oh silly Uncle,
you do not even know half of it!
I need someone who can help me move my boxes
I need to eat something but do not have food
I need toilet paper for the bathroom
I need someone to tell me I am loved and accepted.
I need prayers, uplifting words, something to keep me going
I need a hug.
Oh silly Uncle,
You do not even know half of what I am going through
You called me on the phone to ask me if I will wear earrings
If only you thought of me when you decided on what gift to give me
You know I do not wear jewelry,
Instead of asking me what I would like, want or need.
Instead of getting to know me and learning
I am still experimenting with my style
You are going to buy me a gift that you want to see me wear
So you can point to it and say "your earrings are so pretty, who got them for you?"
And the conversation will go like this:
"You got them for me!
"Yes, I did and who is the best uncle in the world?"
"you are! I wear this everyday, thanks to you!"
Except forcing myself to wear earrings would be lying and hiding who I am.
Maybe you want me to hide who I am and this is another one of your games.
"A special gift for a special person", you said. I can see how I am special to you now.

Do you ever get a little bit tired of life
Like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die
Like you're hanging by a thread but you gotta survive
'Cause you gotta survive
