It could have been me

It could have been me,
A few feet closer
It could have been me,
Had I walked a little faster

It could have been me,
But it wasn't me, instead
It was another person who got shot dead

I happened to have detoured
To avoid the block that brings up shame
I happened to have stopped at a park,
Before I took the walk
To find relief from a stressful home
To find courage to talk on the phone

It could have been me, it was a miracle it wasn't
Demons and angels must have been fighting
But it was also a curse that I've been so near
Inches away from death
I avoid the block even more so
Hosed down with shame
Captured with blame
but now also handcuffed by fear
