Religion as Thearpy? -
March 31st 2009, 04:12 AM
For my birthday, One of my uncles gave me the Holy Bible. I didn't really read it. Til a month ago. I've read it..fully. And I use Psalms through out the day...I use them as my life lessons...people hear me recite them all day. And ask if I'm going crazy?
Do you think Religion could be good therapy? As a 2nd chance by god?

Well actually I'm pretty sure it's been proven that religion/spirituality works as therapy. Embracing religion/spirituality used to be (or still is) one of the 12 steps for recovering addicts.

"Religion" may be used for therapy. But Christianity is not about religion, its about a relationship with the Lord. I just recently became a Christian, the Lord pulled me out of the pits of hell and im completely changed, but if you are just reading the bible for inspiration I think thats great! I absolutely love the bible. It helps with a lot of things. But the ultimate therapy is giving your life up to the Lord.

If it gives you comfort and hope, then it is a very good thing. I personally do not consider myself Christian anymore but I still find hope in certain psalms as well as prayers and hymns. I'm glad you're able to find what you need in the text. So to answer your question: yes, it can be fantastic therapy, and no, you are in no way going crazy. ^_^

I have a slightly different perspective. But it all depends on your definition of 'therapy'.

This is going to be rather biased. I assume most Christian users will say it's good, praise it, whatever other crap, while most non-Christians would say it's fine but not meant for psychotherapy, and other crap.
Myself, I'm a firm atheist. If you want to use it, then go ahead. Second, the majority of people are morons, so if they ask if you're going crazy, ignore their drivel. No, you're not exactly going crazy, you're just becoming a christian

I always thought you were Jewish Cody? Weird, I must've been mixing you up with someone else. Or is this the old testament?
Just do whatever makes you feel happiest. However, don't put all your eggs in one basket, don't make religion your one shot at being happy because when faith fails you generally end up feeling worse. Religion may help you ignore the problems in your life, but the only healthy way to live is by dealing with those problems properly. Religion wont make those problems go away, if you feel like you need therapy don't get it completely from the bible get it from a proffesional.
On the other hand praying and repeating religious phrases have been shown to release endorphins which is why it feels good. Self harm and other depression relatied things also release endorphins so prayer can be a good substitue.

You don't sound crazy to me. Use what works until it stops working, right? Is it a 2nd chance from G-d? I dunno. But does it matter? It's working. There used to be (and maybe still are) religious groups that go to prisons and preach to try to reform criminals. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does.
Jack: I didn't know that about praying vs. SHing and endorphins. When I stopped SHing, I used prayer as a substitute. Cool!

I've heard of people in AA using Christianity as a "relief" or something. I guess it could work? :/

Many, many people turn to all kinds of religion for help whenever they are stressed, angry, etc. Do whatever works for you.
How did Mandela get the will to surpass the everyday,
When injustice had him caged and trapped in every way,
How did Ghandi ever withstand the hunger strikes and all,
Didn't do it to gain power or money if I recall,
It's to give; I guess I'll pass it on

If it works for you, go right ahead. As long as it's not harming anyone but still helping you, it should be okay.

Whatever floats your boat. If it works, more power to you - but I don't see how it would work for everyone.
