Christian Science (The Religion)

Has anyone heard of it? It sounds interesting but I don't know about it. I am referring to the religion that was founded by Mary Baker Eddy, not the actual science.

I have one thing to say, as I admit I don't have a proper understanding to say more. they tend to avoid medical treatment open to them to simply pray, when surely to offered treatment could be the answer to their prayers as God works through others.... so it seems kinda silly...

This is not meant to offend anybody, so don't take it personally if you follow the Church of Christ, Science.

I think it's a load of bull, honestly. They refuse medical treatment and just "pray on it" because Jesus will heal them. Maybe Jesus could do those things, but last I checked he died (and possibly rose on the third day, but the point is we all agree that he died and is no longer on this Earth) so I can't see it happening. Time will heal most things anyway, but you seriously need medical attention if something is wrong.

Re: Christian Science (The Religion)

I've heard of it - we had to do speeches in class on a religion and that was someone's topic. Doesn't it have something to do with using natural methods of healing, instead of modern day medicine? I usually space out in class. But at least I've heard of it.

Re: Christian Science (The Religion)

Basically it pretends that Science and Christianity are impossible to ever reconcile, so then goes on to say that in order to be a true Christian you have to denounce Science, and as a result medecine - replacing it with the "Christian" method of prayer. So if their child is ill they'd rather pray till he's dead than get him treatment.

I don't think my atheist beliefs even remotely come into play when I say that's entire bulls***....

Re: Christian Science (The Religion)

I only heard about this on the Simpsons earlier today (they had a joke about how their van had a flat tyre, but they had to pray and wait until God jacked the car up so they could replace it) but it sounds kinda stupid to me =|

This was actually in the news recently, about a boy who had a curable disease in his kidneys, but his parents didn't take him to a doctor but instead "prayed" on it -- and he died. Now the parents are in jail. Rightfully so, imo.

they have 'christian science practitioners' instead of doctors. lol. they pray instead of getting medical treatment & they don't drink any alcohol. they generally have some rather weird views as well.

It looks like I was wrong with what I thought it was - I just thought it was like, using lemon and honey to cure a sore throat instead of medicine, stuff like that. Which I'm totally cool with. But...praying over people instead of taking them to doctors? YIKES! I would never do that, that's so dumb! :(

I am a born again Christian and I believe that if medical treatment is available, it should be used. Have these people have ever thought that the availability of medical treatment is the answer to prayer?

Also, the Bible says to take care of children. It is neglect not to get your child treatment when she/he has an illness.

I'm an Atheist.

Anyway, I thought they were the group who refused medical treatment, but I think that is someone else. It is interesting because apparently they don't pray and do medical treatment together, but they don't prohibit seeking medical treatment.

no you're right - they don't accept any medical treatment, whether it be along side prayer or not.. doesn't matter.

Darwinian Natural Selection <3

If they want to let themselves die by praying instead of seeking medical attention the gene pool will be better off for it.
