Opinions on mandatory voting in the United States or UK - November 27th 2024, 09:03 AM

Some countries like Australia have mandatory voting. It is literally illegal to not vote. This ensures that the vote accurately represents the majority. However, I feel like people should have just as much of a right to NOT vote their opinion as they do to choose the candidate they like. I feel someone should have the right to under-represent themselves if they so choose.

Fair, but some people complain about how the election turned out when they haven’t done anything to even attempt to prevent that. I guess mandatory voting would solve that problem.

Because I live in Australia, I'm used to the fact that it's compulsory for us to vote.

I absolutely support mandatory voting. You can't complain about the current or upcoming administration, or any other other officials that get elected to office by the public, if you don't vote yourself. Politics can be confusing definitely; but that certainly doesn't mean you can't become educated on the issues the candidates are for or against, at least. The reading material you choose to look at can either be super complicated or super simple, so there's absolutely no reason not to vote.

Also, be mindful that the 2024 election allowed voters to do a write-in vote. So, really, you have absolutely no excuse not to vote.

So, I am absolutely for mandatory voting.
