Daylight Savings time or no? - February 2nd 2025, 08:56 AM

Many people complain about changing the clocks twice a year because they were incorrectly taught that it is just a useless tradition or about energy consumption. The energy is definitely a part of it, but the truth is that daylight savings time is a way for society to adapt to changes in daylight hours. People complain about the time change, but if we didnt do it the sun would shine through your window before 4am in June in northern locations. I think that would mess up your sleep more than a twice a year time change. It makes more sense to me to have an extra hour of sun after work rather than blocking out an extra hour of sun in the AM with blackout curtains. Id be ok with permanent daylight savings time, because them the sun would set an hour later in the winter but also rise an hour later. This was unpopular when it was tried due to kids waiting for the bus in the dark. However I think permanent standard time is inferior to the current system of changing clocks. That is to say: I disagree with Trump and many others on this and feel that changing the clocks twice a year is less of an inconvenience than dealing with excessively early mornings in the summer and excessively late in the winter. It doesnt matter why we started doing this: it has real benefits even in the modern era and should continue. Personally I feel like a day of "losing an hour" is a small price to pay for an entire summer of reasonable sunrise hours and late sun. Sure there are more accidents the day of the time change, but this is compensated for by a reduction in accidents when there is later daylight due to daylight savings. In fact a coalition for car insurance companies has recently come out against standard time and advocating for permanent daylight saving instead. What would you prefer? Biannual clock changes? Permanent Daylight Saving Time? Permanent Standard Time?

Some say to "just change your schedule" but they are disconnected from the reality that most Americans can not just change their work schedule.
