Tattoo over scars, - January 11th 2012, 06:53 PM

What happens if you get a tattoo over a scar?
People have said it hurts more to get done,
People say it don't hurt as much,
And people have said it makes the tattoo look wierd,
So I'm pretty confused! ><

It depends on the scar. If you're looking to get a tattoo, just ask the artist.

The pain tolerance depends completely on the person. My hip tattoo didn't hurt as much as the one on my ankle did, but none of my piercings caused me any pain. Everyone has different pain tolerances, and how we deal with pain. So, what might hurt for other people might not hurt for you and vice versa.

However, trying to cover a scar with a tattoo might make the tattoo look strange, but the decision is entirely up to you. I'd definitely talk to the tattoo artist you're considering using in terms of that.

It depends on the scar if we can tattoo it or not. If it's still a relatively new scar and raised we can't tattoo it. If it's an older scar/faded a bit, it shouldn't be a huge deal. The problem with tattooing over scar tissue, is that they don't like to take/hold the ink so your tattoo will have blank spots or patchy areas where the scar tissue is if it's relatively new. It can still be tricky getting ink to stay in the old scars too but not as difficult. BTW, I am a tattoo artist so feel free to ask away!

Most tattoo artists will not tattoo over a deep scar. You have to ask your tattoo shops near you.

Re: Tattoo over scars, - January 12th 2012, 07:22 PM

It depends on the scar. Personally, I tend to scar up really bad, it gets raised and red and whatnot. That would make the tattoo look weird probably. But less intense scars, like old ones that aren't as raised, aren't red (usually more like a tan color) wouldn't really effect the tattoo at all. There are some artists that won't tattoo over a scar, so you should ask that question first before anything else.

Take me seriously.
I dare you.
