Upper Back Tattoo or Neck: Pain?
I'm going to be getting a tattoo soon and obviously know that it will hurt. I'm wondering which location would hurt less. I've heard that getting tattoos on more fleshy parts of your body is less painful than anywhere that is bony and contains alot of nerve endings. Any advice?

Re: Upper Back Tattoo or Neck: Pain?
I got one done on my upper back/lower neck area.. It was a little bit of both. I found that my back was more uncomfortable, only because I have this weird weak spot that makes me twitch a bit. Haha.. But otherwise, I didn't really feel a difference. Personally, it did hurt more than my arm and wrist pieces.
It also depends on how much you're getting done on it. I have "Art is War" on my neck/back. Cursive into a very grungey font. So if you're doing a lot more than intricate fonts/words, I'm not really the one to give advice. Lol |
Re: Upper Back Tattoo or Neck: Pain?
Hey Kali,
While it does hurt more to get tattoos on bony places than fleshy places, the amount of pain varies for person to person depending on pain tolerance. Places like the tops of the hands, the ribs, and the feet would hurt more than the thigh or the arm. The neck would probably be more painful than the upper back unless you plan to get the upper back tattoo right where the spinal cord is. Take care, Kitty. |
Re: Upper Back Tattoo or Neck: Pain?
My tattoo is on my foot, (Which I don't suggest, as it is very painful) and has an intricate font, which my artist said would be more painful. And if the font has thicker letters it would be more painful.
And yes thicker fleshier areas are less painful, but it depends on your body as well. My foot tattoo hurt a lot, but a friend of mine got hers on her foot and it only tickled. For a first tattoo I advise on the leg or center/lower back. Any questions, just ask away. I know quite a bit about tattoos, I'm kinda a fanatic :hehe: |
Re: Upper Back Tattoo or Neck: Pain?
I would watch where you get tats on your back, because sometimes women who get a "tramp stamp" or a lower back tattoo can't get an epidural during labour because of the ink or something. I don't know, but that's just what I've heard from people who have those. They went into labour and all of a sudden it was liek "uh no dude we can't give you pain meds, shouldn't have gotten a tat there."
Regardless of where you get a tattoo, it's going to hurt like a son of a holy crap. Prepare yourself for the absolute worst pain of your life, so that when it happens, it doesn't feel as bad as you thought. I always go into the chair with the mindset that it's going to be excrutiating, so that when it happens, it hurts less haha. If you go in thinking ah it's nothing, the pain will surprise you. Good luck, and post pictures ;) |
Re: Upper Back Tattoo or Neck: Pain?
Well I've got a tattoo on my upper back, its even on my shoulder blade. It really didn't hurt all that bad. My other tattoo is sort of on my neck, its behind my ear and that one wasn't bad too, but I think it hurt a little more than the one on my shoulder.
But like everyone has said, the pain is different for everyone. But its definitely bearable so if its something you want, then go for it :) |
