College English paper? - April 10th 2013, 05:45 PM

For my college English class I'm writing an argumentative paper about what penalties should be applied to child abuse. This is a very personal paper because I was abused as a child. I need a thesis statement that supports my view that there needs to be stronger penalties for child abuse. I'm horrible with thesis statements and I'm trying to make this one of my best papers because its so personal, but I can't think of a good thesis statement. Any ideas?

If this is going to be a "personal" paper, then shouldn't you be the one to come up with the thesis? Here's a website that offers some basic tips about creating a thesis statement. If you want to start there, then post your rough draft here, I'd be happy to look at it and offer feedback! =) If your class has a TA, or if your professor has office hours, I'd also utilize those resources.

I agree with Robin here. I know for my literature class, our professor showed us a bit about how to do thesis statements for a certain type of paper we had to do so we could get a general idea. However, your paper is very personal to you so you should talk to your professor for suggestions. You can definitely talk to your professor or if the class has one, a TA. Also there are quite a few websites online that have a lot of information on this topic such as the one Robin linked to you.
Thesis's are tricky but once you create enough of them, the process will get easier.
Hopefully you do well.
