Social work! - October 1st 2012, 09:35 AM

Just wondering if there are any other social work students on here. I can't be the only one.

Re: Social work! - October 1st 2012, 05:44 PM

I’m a psych major, but I am taking intro to social working and I really enjoy it. It has its connections to psychology but it also has its own school of thought. So some lectures I am in agreement with the professor, other lectures not so much. I am surprised how politically conservative my professor is. I assumed, even though I shouldn’t have, that social workers as a whole would be more liberal. But it seems almost to be the opposite. I have come to gather that social workers feel that social welfare programs are degrading society and creating dependence on the government as opposed to dependence on themselves.

Re: Social work! - October 1st 2012, 08:56 PM

I just graduated with a bachelors in psychology, but I also took quite a few social work classes throughout my undergrad career. I was two courses away from making it my minor, but unfortunately I ran out of time. I really liked social work and considered going into the field, but eventually decided that counseling was better suited for me.

I agree with Lizzie that I was surprised when one of my social work professors seemed to have more conservative views than liberal. That is the thing about social work though - they have certain views but try not to let it influence their work. I think social workers think that certain welfare programs are necessary - everyone goes through hard times - but that people do need be empowered and learn how to help themselves as well.

Well I have always leaned more towards Foster Care and CPS type stuff and maybe some adoption stuff. I have heard that all the stuff I want to do is the hardest but I could care less, someone needs to do it and Im willing, what about you?

Re: Social work! - October 3rd 2012, 01:36 AM

I was considering doing an MSW once I am done my undergrad and maybe specialize in the aboriginal stream, so I'd be able to work on the reserves cause I'd have the extra training there. But I dunno, I mostly want a masters just to give me that extra oomf in life and I don't know that that's realistic.
