All about Bullying. - January 28th 2011, 10:46 PM

Hopefully this thread will get you all thinking about bullying a little more and how to prevent it, and not do it.

Yesterday at school, I saw someone who obviously is disabled, and tormented. They commented about her looks, and how she couldn't walk or talk properly. They just made awful comments. I intervened, and stuck up for her.

How horrible is it that people are getting bullied for something they can't help? It broke my heart. Everyone, and I do mean everyone, is beautiful.

Here are things I think you guys should take notice of:

-What do you do when you see someone getting bullied?

-Step in and stick up for that person. You can prevent them from hurting themselves, or others. And just showing that you care, means A LOT to that person.

-Tell a teacher or an adult, if you don't feel comfortable standing up for the person. An adult can handle the situation.

-If you are in the public, and you are the only witness where there is weapons involved, contact the police. They are going to want you to fill out a statement, but it needs to be stopped.

-Befriend someone who you wouldn't normally, or someone who doesn't have friends at all. We all want a good friend. Everyone of us.

What to do when YOU'RE being bullied?

-Remove yourself from any bullying situation. After that, tell someone.

-Defend yourself. If you are being bullied, you have that right to defend yourself.

-Report them, to whoever the appropriate people are. And if you don't feel safe, stay with that person. Tell them you feel like your safety is at risk.

-If they blow your report off, report it again, and again, and again. Get 'annoying.' Bullying starts, and stops with people. You can stop it.

What constitutes as bullying?
-Rude comments about the following:
-Race
-Looks
-Weight
-Family
-Sexual Orientation
-Gender
-Culture
-Disabled
-Color of skin
-Age
-etc.

-Physical violence, and verbal violence.

Types of Bullying:
-Verbal bullying including rude comments and name calling
-Bullying through social groups
-Physical
-Bullying through lies, and false rumors
-Being threatened or forced to do things
-Cyber Bullying (Via internet, text, email)

Please try and avoid making jokes about the above. What you think is a joke, might not be a joke to others. If someone asks you to stop. Then do it. You can get in a lot of serious trouble for 'joking' and bullying in general.

Why Do Some People Bully?
-Trying to gain approval from peers
-A way of coping
-To look tough
-Raise self esteem
-Jealousy

The Impacts On the People Being Bullied
-Depression
-Low self esteem
-Substance abuse
-Bad grades
-Potential carrying of weapons

Impact On the People Who Witness Bullying
-Fearful
-Powerless to act
-Guilty for not acting
-Tempting to participate
-PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Online Bullying:
-What was said above applies to online bullying as well. This is where things become unclear. We are all safe behind our computer screens (provided we don't give out personal info, and I hope we don't) therefore people start to harass and bully people they feel superior to.

For example: If you sign up for some sort of website where there is communication with others that are taking place, most times older users will feel superior to the new members, thus making it so they can bash them

I just want you all to realize that words on the computer hurt just as much as any thing else. They can affect us in a negative way. Sometimes in an extreme negative way. if you take anything from this: Try to be careful with your words, and be respectful of everyone.

Bullying is becoming increasingly worse as time goes by. I think that we all need to take a stand and support each other; Online and offline. Stick up for someone getting bullied, especially if you were bullied at one time in your life. We all know how it feels to be hurt by someones words.

Like I said, please watch what you say to people. You have no idea about their past and history.
Put yourself in others shoes.

so true, schools never seem to do enough even when you do tell schools are like we'll speak to them but its not usually enough. but sticking up for people is good , sometimes sticking up for someone who cant stand up for themselves is always good.

Great post. This is much needed everywhere.
It's sad that even many school officials bully youth just as much as other students do. I know in my school it is like this, and I'm happy I'm graduating in four months.

This is a wonderful thread, Lynds. Thanks a ton for making it, we all here at TH is lucky to have someone who cares this much like you. We need to start spreading it out there, on networking sites, text, email, and, of course, the outside world.

The news on bullying, and some of the suicides that have come from it, has gotten ridiculously insane lately and it needs to stop!

Lyndsee that is a very excellent post. Schools, companies, and government organizations definitely should use postings like yours as the basis for anti-bullying campaigns I think.

Thanks Lyndsee! I love your post and I completely agree with you. There was this boy at my elementary school who never seemed to stop hurting other people, or "fooling" around. Never learned even after numerous detentions which makes me wonder how he got into that Catholic school. But I wish he got this message, it's sad that he has to be this way. There was also this boy in my grade who was bullied. He was bullied for being himself ): I really do admire him for his courage, tenacity, and spirit. He is still here, as the spirited person I know =) BULLYING NEEDS TO BE STOPPED AND MORE PEOPLE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

It is really sad. It tends to happened everywhere.

Elizabeth, the person who was being the bully, probably was insecure with himself and felt the need to one up everyone in order to make himself feel better. He will learn.

Great post! Peer pressure and bullying happen because the person doing them is insecure about themselves and needs to get others to act a certain way (or put them down) to make themselves feel better.

Good post. Thanks for taking the time to post it.
It's true. It is getting out of hand. I don't understand how a person gets a high off of someone else getting hurt from their comments??
I befriend anyone. I don't judge people, and I stick up for someone who is getting bullied whenever I can.
Bullying needs to stop! There would probably be a lot less suicides if people cared more.

I try my best to help, but that doesn't always mean I will be helpful.

Re: The Bullying Needs to Stop. (Worth reading) - February 2nd 2011, 10:00 PM

You are beautiful Lyndsee and your post shows all that beauty that is on the inside. I got a little teary eyed reading this because I was remembering my friend who committed suicide for being bullied and how no one stood up for her and such. Then I remembered all those who stood up for me when I went through some stuff. But this post shows everyone that something needs to be done to protect our society. And, we all can do that, just by befriending someone who needs it most. The small things, like sitting with someone new at lunch or standing for what is right. Even do things like holding a door for someone can help change the world a small step at a time. We all are capable of doing this and more people just need to step it up and do what is important.

If you see someone being bullied but are too scared to stand for them, atleast make sure the person is okay and be their friend. In real life, it is better to be friends with those who need it, not the bully. I have learned that in life. I was friends with a bully in high school, i havent talked to them in 2 years since I graduated, but have been closer than ever to all those who were attacked by the bully.

Thank you so much, lyndsee, for posting this. Love yous. <3

Mitch,
Sounds like that person is afraid to do anything outright, or they don't know that that is what they are doing.

I don't think it is bullying, as it doesn't fit. It *might* be if they intentionally turned people against you. But if they didn't do it purposely, then they merely don't fit as a bully, in my opinion.

I think that turning the school against someone is still bullying. My school considers it to be, anyways. If you do it with malicious intent, then it's bullying. But I dont' see how you could 'accidentally' turn the school against someone.
