Is a cheesecake a pie or a cake? Discuss. -
December 2nd 2021, 02:23 AM
Cheesecake: pie or cake? It has CAKE in the name, but it is on a pie crust. Let's argue
Do you ever get a little bit tired of life
Like you're not really happy but you don't wanna die
Like you're hanging by a thread but you gotta survive
'Cause you gotta survive

Modern cheesecake is not usually classified as an actual "cake", despite the name (compare with Boston cream "pie"). — Wikipedia [source]
I consider it to be a sort of custard pie.

I haven't really thought about the question really.
Though, it might be a tart?

I consider it a cake simply because some cheesecakes will actually include layers of regular cake within the cheesecake itself.

I consider it a cake because to me, a pie belongs in pastry, whereas cheesecake has a biscuit base

This argument wins. Way to go, Hollie!
(and the biscuit is the best part in my opinion!)

Cake, because usually a pie has a pastry covering a filling whereas cheesecake doesn't have that...my reasoning anyway

I've never had cheesecake but I consider it to be its own genre. It's not a cake, nor a pie. It's a cheesecake, it's something of its own. :P

I think it depends on cultural views. It's like in the UK, a biscuit is a sweet treat. Whereas in the US, a biscuit looks more like a British scone and is something that goes with gravy (ew by the way).
I imagine it's down to the intention of its creator, and their cultural background. The cheesecake was created by the Greeks. During its creation, the cheesecake has evolved and changed over thousands of years. In essence, it's called a cheesecake, but is nowhere near the same dessert it originally was. The English adapted the dessert with a different tart base, but kept the name.
Ultimately, I think it's down to culture and opinion.
Personally, a cake to me involves a sponge. A pie involves pastry. The modern cheesecake has neither.

I’d definitely consider it a cake because usually the ones that I eat have many different layers.
