Introduction
2017 was quite the year in news around the world. Almost every day something has happened in one country or another. Some we might not have heard about, others were all over news stations, magazines, and newspapers. Below are some of the top stories from each month around the world.
January
On January 1, 2017 at around 1:15 AM, Abdulkadir Masharipov entered Reina Nightclub, which is one of the most popular nightclubs in Istanbul. Once inside he immediately started shooting into the crowd while everyone in the club was ringing in the New Year. He ended up killing 39 and injuring 69. This was seen as an act of terror and eventually ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) stepped forward and announced that it was them who orchestrated the attack. On January 16, police raided a home that belonged to Abdulkadir Masharipov’s friend, which is where he was living at the time of the attack. The gunman was seen leaving the scene in a taxi by witnesses.
February
Super Bowl 51 was played on February 5 at the NRG stadium in Houston, Texas. The teams playing were the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. With only a quarter to play, New England was trailing by a score of 28-3. This shocked many football fans as the New England Patriots have always been one of the top NFL teams. With quarterback Tom Brady’s help, the team quickly went back to having a chance when they had a score of 28-12 with only 9:44 remaining on the clock. By the end of the game, New England Patriots beat Atlanta Falcons 34-28. After having to miss the first four games of the new season due to a scandal, Tom Brady made a huge comeback and guaranteed himself the place of the greatest player of all time.
March
On March 22, 2017 there was a terrorist attack at the Westminster Bridge and the House of Parliament area. This was the first of several attacks in England during 2017. You can read a full article about this and the other England attacks in 2017

April
On April 9, 2017, United Airlines became the hot topic of the month. One of their flights was overbooked, and they were offering passengers refunds of $400 and then $800 to voluntarily give up their seats. No one did, so they then selected four passengers at random; one included Dr. Dao. The other three left their seats with no hesitation, except Dr. Dao as he had to get back home to treat his patients the next day. All around the world people were outraged by the way Dr. David Dao was treated on flight 3411 at Chicago O’Hare Airport. Dr. Dao refused to give up his seat to an employee of another airline and was then dragged out of his seat and through the airplane and eventually off the plane. According to Dr. Dao’s lawyer, he suffered multiple broken teeth, a broken nose, and a concussion. Eventually the airline and Dr. Dao came to an undisclosed amount agreement.
May
On Sunday May 28, a 29-year-old Ontario male stole an ambulance from Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge, Ontario. The ambulance was stolen just after midnight when the attendant wasn’t paying attention, the ambulance was empty at the time. The ambulance was followed by The Region of Waterloo Police Service as it was driving carelessly down Highway 401, which is one of the longest highways in North America, the lights and sirens were on at the time. Once it left the city, the pursuit was taken over by the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) who are in charge of patrolling most country roads and highways in Ontario. The pursuit went through Toronto, the capital city of Ontario towards Wasaga Beach when the OPP used spike strips across the road so that it would puncture the tires of the ambulance, which was a success. The pursuit lasted approximately six hours and thankfully, no one was hurt.
June
On June 4, 2017, famous singer, Ariana Grande, held a benefit concert called “One Love Manchester” to raise money for the victims of the Manchester arena bombings back in May. There were many different singers who joined in the concert as 10.9 million people from around the world watched for the entire three hours. Approximately 50,000 people showed up to the concert and it raised over $2.9 million. All funds raised will go to the British Red Cross. Reports say that Ariana Grande reached out to the families of the 22 victims and offered her condolences and offered to pay for their funeral costs.
July
Canada turned 150! July 1 marked Canada’s 150th birthday. Canada officially became a country on July 1, 1867 and in August 1867 Sir John A. MacDonald became Canada’s first prime minister. Jacques Cartier had originally claimed Canada’s land in 1534. Canada is the 5th largest country in the world. It has 10 provinces and 3 territories. Canada’s animal is the beaver, the top winter sport is hockey, the top summer sport is lacrosse, and red and white are the national colours.
August
No one likes seeing people in hospitals, especially younger children and babies. In August, Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College located in Gorakhpur, India, suffered a major lack of oxygen resources in the hospital.This oxygen shortage claimed the lives of approximately 290 children, most of who were newborns, within a few days. 213 died in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the other 77 in the encephalitis ward, which has people with inflammation of the brain. This adds to the total of 1250 deaths that the hospital has had since January 2017.
September
September 2017 was the most active hurricane month on record for Atlantic hurricanes. Many people from around the world will remember the names Irma (Category 5), Maria (Category 5), Harvey (Category 4) and Jose (Category 4). Combined, Irma and Harvey could cost up to $300 Billion US Dollars. On September 20th, hurricane Maria made a direct hit onto Puerto Rico, which resulted in extensive damage to their power grid. The governor said that most power would be restored by December with everyone being restored by February. As of May 2018, 5% Puerto Rico is without power. Disney World in Orlando, Florida, closed for the fifth time ever because of hurricane Irma.
October
On Sunday October 1, there was approximately 22,000 people attending a concert in Las Vegas, Nevada when the worst shooting in modern American history happened. Stephen Paddock, 64-years-old from Nevada had rented a hotel room in the Mandalay Bay Resort, which gave him direct view of the outdoor concert. Paddock broke his hotel window and then bullets began to flood the crowd as people went running for their lives. People described the sounds as firecrackers and then a machine gun sound. Approximately 59 people died, and 527 were injured. When law enforcement went into his hotel room, they located 23 guns and found another 19 in his home. The day after the shooting, people lined up outside clinics in Las Vegas to become a blood donor to help the victims of this act.
November
Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Manson was mostly known for being a serial killer who was eventually found guilty and was sent to the death penalty on March 29, 1971. However, in 1972, the death penalty was no longer an option in California, so the jail sentence ended up being life in prison. In 2012, Manson applied for parole for the 12th time, which was denied. Manson was transported to hospital on November 17, 2017, but died two days later because of natural causes, he was 83.
December
On December 14, it was announced that Disney had purchased most of 21st Century Fox assets for a $52 Billion mega-deal. They inherited a lot of big name TV shows and Movies, including Marvel, Ice Age, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and lots more. The deal is due to be finalized in Summer 2019.
