Extreme addiction of biting my nails -
February 15th 2010, 10:46 AM
I have an extreme addiction for biting my nails. Right now, my nails are to the nub (they are bitten all the down) I don't know why I bite my nails, but I've biting my nails for a long time & I don't know how to stop.

I don't really have any advice since I am in the same situation..(see first thread).
I think if you realise why you are doing it, it makes it easier to stop. So every time you bit your nails stop and think about what the situation is that made you bite them. For me it is boredom and stress.

They hurt very bad because I just bit them. Well, I don't why I bite them, because probarly I'm bored/ stressed. It's a major habit for me. I've been biting them for years, so I'm used to them hurting & very short nails.

I used to bite my nails, alot. Until I saw a video from Science class about how "Ring Worms" like nail-biters. Yes, microscopic worms under the nails. It grossed me away from it, not going to lie.
You'll associate your nail biting with the bad taste and will naturally find yourself stopping.
When you first start using this nail varnish, you'll still find an urge to bite your nails so find something you can keep your hands busy with in the mean time. Or find something else to chew on.

Haha, I have tried so many different brands of this type of nail varnish over the years and they have never bothered me. There was 1 that was a bit gross but after I picked the nail varnish off I just never reapplied it.

Also, you can put nail polish on. It tastes gross when I try to bite my nails, but it's easy to get off.

I bet it does work. I only smelt nail polish remover when I try to get the nail polish off my fingers sometimes because the nail polish just kinda annoys me. The stuff smells nasty. I hope I can get something to work for me so I dont bite my nails. So far I havent biten them since yesterday and thats REALLY good for me because most of the time I cant stand not biting them all day.

Really?
Gosh. I cannot stand the taste.
I don't know then, umm.
Try getting a manicure. Splash out a little. Natural deterrent. You don't want to chew your money away.
Or. If you're really desperate. Hypnosis. Not had any experience with it myself but I know a fair few people who have stopped smoking and overcome fears due to it.

Hey (:
I used to have the same problem as you. I would bite and bite my nails until they were stubby and sore. I don't really do that anymore though; what helped me was making my nails look nice. I find that when they are a decent length and I paint them nice colours I don't really want to bite them because they don't look nice! I'm not sure if this will work for you but its worth a shot! Why not invest in a few nice coloured nail varnishes?

I used to have this problem too. I'd bite my nails so much that they'd bleed sometimes and become unsightly. I'd discovered a solution to this. Cut your nails often and all the way as much as possible, not until its so short, it hurts of course. With your nails cut short, there is no chance for your teeth to bite on them. More likely than not, it's the fact that you feel that your nails are long that prompt you to bite them. That's based on my experience anyway. Whenever I see my nails grow longer and has it colour change because there is no flesh behind it, I start biting. Good luck!

Well, so far I'm not biting them, I'm wearing gloves now. So I haven't bitten them for two days now I believe.
EDIT: You can close this now. I havent been biting my nails so resolved. (:
