Computer Addiction - July 17th 2009, 04:56 AM

I have wondered why i have spent at least 10 hours a day on the computer ever since the summer started. I check my email at least 10 times a day and i play games for about 5 hours a day. i applied for about 10 jobs and i never got called back so im stuck here at home doing nothing. every time my parents want to talk to me i become impatient and go back to the computer. i dun have any friends out here cuz my parents live out of state. i dun like going out most of the time cuz i feel embarrassed with my parents.

i found new hobbies like books and poker, but online poker has been keeping me on the pc for awhile cuz i really want to make some money. i have not played with real money but i want to cuz im not making any money at all.

its pretty boring out here. i cant really make myself go out and do stuff. im getting abit lazy.

Re: Computer Addiction - July 18th 2009, 01:39 AM

I think this might not be an addiction in a sense, as it seems you actually have no other alternative of doing anything else at the moment so you do need something to fill the time- I think being embrassed to go with parents is a normal thing to. To get out the house you may want to look at social groups and clubs that are nearby and see if you can involved in them to give yourself some time out of the houese- it might be worth seeing if there are actually any local poker games that run weekly or something worth going to- although I won't advise spending too much money on them. As for over-using the computer, you could set up a program that only allows the computer to be used for a certain amount of time per day, otherwise it locks you out or will shut down- these programs can be found quite easily with enough looking around.

Re: Computer Addiction - July 18th 2009, 03:54 AM

I wouldn't say it was an addiction so to speak, unless if your out doing something else you have an urge to go back to the computer.

If it is an addiction I suffer from it desperatly. I can go from waking up at 9 - 10, having my computer on and ready to go, and then sleeping at 1 or2 in the morning, with that entire day constantly occupying myself with the computer.

I think its a lack of alternatives to do, a lack of friends ECT.
It is quite lonely sometimes, especially when my online friends are going out every week... every day... to parties and things.

As for finding social clubs or groups, it is kind of hard as after years of this lifestyle all my interests are focused around one-person activity, often linked with the computer.

Ah well...

Re: Computer Addiction - July 19th 2009, 01:00 PM

If you have other hobbies then I think you have to find a way to pull yourself away from the computer to persue them. I.e How about going to the library to read so then you have no access to your computer and since you have no money you can't use the ones at the library (if there is any)

Sounds like the problems you're having with your parents and your location would be solved if you moved out. Keep hunting for jobs, something will come your way. Good luck!

Sounds like using the PC less is a positive step forward. How do your parents stop you from being in a band? If that's what you want to do, maybe you should set a goal and just do it...

I'm the same. I've been trying to take a break from the computer for awhile, though.
If you're barely going out, maybe you should try to change that a bit, as going out and being social is something that's often really important in life. You can go out simply by yourself, and do things that don't cost much money, or any at all. I'm sure there are a few things in your area, you just have to brainstorm and come up with some new things to do

Re: Computer Addiction - July 20th 2009, 10:07 PM

I am totally addicted to my computer -.-
Basically I'd say set a timer. Only allow yourself to go on your computer for 2 hours a day, or 4 hours a day. When you have been on for that time, get off the computer. Go for a run/walk, play a game, sing a song, even just go to bed! It can be really hard, I know. But getting out and having fun away from the computer is important. =]

I hope things work out for you

Um. This may sound harsh? But -- JUST SAY NO. O_O

Seriously, nobody can break you away from teh computer but yourself. There isn't a miracle cure or something. Just turn the darn thing off and go to Starbucks or to the park or wherever.... You don't have to have money to go out. Go skate! Go read a sci-fi book in the library!

Yup......

Re: Computer Addiction - July 28th 2009, 08:26 PM

Every summer, I have to come home from Illinois to Arizona and I dont have a guitar here so my skills are fading away. i was in good shape 2 years ago with a band and i felt that i was improving alot. but when i started college, i stopped practising because my dorm had a noise policy and also i didn like messing around when my roommate was trying to study. i tried improving last year but i got caught up with partying.

i dont have the money to buy a new guitar. if i had a job, that would be the first thing i would buy. i want to become a better guitar player and i want to make good music. i feel that i dont get to practice much in college cuz im always busy. i hope that will change as i will have my own room and i dun have to disturb anyone like before.
