The doctor was wrong -
October 7th 2011, 12:55 PM
So, apparently, my sister's new doctor thinks she is farther along than we had first gathered. Her first doctor said she was about 8 weeks (at her first doctor's visit in July) and her due date was going to be February 20th.
She didn't like this doctor as he made her very uncomfortable, so she made an appointment with a new doctor. She went for the first time yesterday, and he is thinking that she might be 23-24 weeks along, instead of 20 (as she is this week).
How can a doctor be so incredibly wrong about how far along she is? We're hoping the next ultrasound can either confirm or deny this claim, since that means we'd have to get busy planning a baby shower since the baby would be coming near the end of January, not the end of February.

They can be wrong, especially since you can only estimate using the ultrasound or dates etc.
If equipment was calibrated wrong, it would be easy to mis-calculate size.

So you're automatically assuming this new doctor is right?

I didn't say I was assuming anything. This new doctor is in an actual doctor's office, not a teaching clinic (she at first attended a doctor within the teaching clinic). I said we were having to wait until the next ultrasound to determine whether or not it was true, or what the issue here is. I never once in my post said he was right. So, thanks for putting words in my mouth. The real question I wanted to know was: how can a doctor be wrong about something like this? This doesn't mean the new doctor is right or the old doctor was wrong. It was a simple, general question...which you did not answer.

It was strongly implied.
And in all honesty you'd get a much more accurate from the first ultrasound, so if the first ultrasound agreed with the first doctor than the first doctor is probably right.
