The doctor won't give me birth control??? -
January 27th 2011, 07:50 PM
So yea I just lost my virginity which I’m ok with. I’m actually pretty happy with my decision. I waited for someone who I really loved and cared about and who really loved me, plus we've been together awhile. The timing just felt right. But my concern obviously is being safe. I know about protecting myself, but I wanted to be birth control if I was going to be sexually active. At the doctors yesterday, I asked about getting on birth control. They basically said No. I had to sit through being lectured condescendingly about abstinence and waiting till marriage, then was told I obviously hadn’t thought it through and should think about it more before becoming sexually active. It was really uncomfortable and I was only trying to be proactive about my health. I don’t know what to do now….so I guess my question is have any of you run into this problem? What do you guys think I should do?

This seems very odd--they should not be there to lecture but to advise. When I went to my doctor about the Pill she was pretty supportive about me going on it, and doubling up on contraception. Is there any chance you could see a different doctor?

Ok wow, first of all, If you are twenty years old, I think the whole "OMG PLEASE don't have sex. it will ruin your life!! " bit should stop..in my honest opinion.
In other news, if the first doctor simply will not give you birth control because of a philosophical reason like that, and not a medical reason, then it's either time to go to a different doctor, or tell your doctor to be a doctor not a pastor. If you wanted advice on the ethics of premarital sex, you could have gone anywhere else to other people who are more qualified to answer that question.
As far as a doctor goes, their responiblity is about keeping your body healthy. And as far as I know, saying "I do" does not drastically change the effectiveness of birth control or the effect of sex. Heck, I know some doctors prescribe birth control to 13-14 year old girls to stabilize their periods. No one is assuming they are having sex. So, unless he has any good MEDICAL reason to deny you birth control, allergic reaction, hormonal imbalance, or something, he has no reason to deny you the medicine you request.
If all else fails, either go over is head and explain why he denied you the prescribetion you requested, or go to antoher doctor to have a second opinion.

You're an adult. You are legally allowed to ask for birth control and are entitled to receive it, unless there is a medical reason why you shouldn't, without a moral lecture. I recommend going to another doctor, specifically a women's doctor. They would be more likely to explore your birth control options with you without a fuss.

Totally reiterating what Jordan said. Avoid using family doctors (if that's who you went to). You're much better off seeing a lady doctor. In fact, when I went, I didn't even have to ask. They basically just said "Hey, you want this? Ok here's the prescription."
You should be commended for taking a proactive step toward protecting yourself.

These doctors should just prescribe you the pill and not give you advice and poke their nose in where it doesn't belong.
I would suggest going to a walk-in Clinic or just make an appointment with some other doctors, ones who won't lecture you and be annoying.

Get a nice lady doctor. Your doctor should not lecture you on your perfectly normal choices.
I was lucky, my doctor (a lady) specialises in women's health. The moment my boyfriend and I turned up in her office and I said the word 'sex', she gave me half a dozen pamphlets and then asked which one I might prefer.
Five minutes late I had a script for the implant and an appointment for insertion.
Happy to talk about anything and everything.

Isn't that illegal? I would definitely find a different doctor. I'm guess those doctors had a biased opinion, and if they're going to put their own religious biases into their work, then they probably shouldn't be practicing gynecology.

Be sure you weren't going to a catholic hospital as well. They won't prescribe it.

Well I agree with Will. He pretty much said everything I was thinking. Your a grown woman you can do what you want it is YOUR body and YOUR life. The doctors have no say in your sexual activity and morals regarding abstinance. (sorry i butchered that word im tired ) also like will said they are doctors not pastors unless there is a good medical reason you should be denied this medication they cant refuse because of THEIR personal beliefs tell them to save it for their kids. I suggest seeing a different doctor or visiting a walk in clinic

I would have to agree with TJ. Catholic hospitals won't prescribe Birth Control. My best advice would be to change doctors, so you can get the birth control you need
Best of luck.

that's not right for your doctor to do that. when I wanted to go on the pill, I was immediately given a prescription? as others have said, try another doctor.

There's no law that says a 12-year-old can't have birth control either...

Doctors have a legal obligation to give you the pill unless there's a medical reason - they he'll advise and you ultimately make the end decision. In fact, I don't know why they don't just sell it over the counter.

Doctors do not have any obligation whatsoever to prescribe prescription drugs. They can do so at their own discretion and beliefs.

I have no clue about the legalities, but at least here, you have total and complete say over whether or not you go on the pill. Their job is to provide you with information about the different types of birth control there are and help you make an educated decision about what's right for you and your body.
Then again, I wasn't aware there were catholic hospitals. To me, going to a catholic hospital for birth control would be like seeing someone who believes in holistic remedies for what prescription drug might help best with what you're experiencing.
If this was a regular, run-of-the-mill doctor, she should have been given a prescription for BC. It's a doctor's job to provide it alongside education (not a lecture), not to shove their belief down someone else's throat, especially when that someone else is a legal adult. I spoke to my doctor about birth control at my university's health center, and though she asked me questions and spoke to me about my relationship at the time and relationships in general, she wasn't condescending and she wasn't about to give me a lecture and seeing as I was 18, she really had no choice but to prescribe the pill to me. But I'm assuming that there's a difference between privately owned and state funded establishments? As far as the difference in legal obligations? Not sure how that works, but my advice to the OP is to see a different doctor. You shouldn't have been turned down.

The doctor was out of line in treating you that way. File a complaint with your state's medical board.

What state are you in? I'm curious to see what the boards have to say in regards to that.

PEOPLE. The doctor did NOTHING wrong. The doctor only has to do what they believe is best! Especially if she went to a religious hospital (which 90% of them are!). If you have a problem with your doctor, find a NEW one. END OF STORY!!

If that had been me I would not have sat through the lecture. I would have told them to fuck off and walked out. But I have a temper.
You definitely should go to a gynocologist. Since it's their job to prescribe birth control if asked they certainly can't deny you. Also it would be GREAT if you could find a way to report this doctor, because what he did was irresponsible.
