Anxiety Medication - February 26th 2009, 06:03 PM

Okay well I was wondering if there's any medication you could get without having to go to the doctor for anxiety.

I wouldn't say I'm that bad but sometimes when I'm alone in the house I'll hear noises and think someone's in the house. It makes me literally freeze in bed but at the same time I get really hot. Sometimes I forget to breath as well because I'm listening to hear downstairs. Eventually I'll be able to move again and I'll go downstairs to have it look. This happens everytime I'm at my dad's and I can't go to sleep until I've checked downstairs.
I also think that something bad's going to happen. I always think about the worst possible outcomes of a situation and it makes me even more anxious. Like, if I go out I'll worry that I've left my straighteners on and the house will burn down or I'll worry that my mum will go out and get hurt or something. It's starting to control my life. Sometimes if I'm stood in a crowded area I'll think people are staring at me and talking at me.

Hey Cara!
Wow. You pretty much just described how I feel.

As far as I know, there are no over-the-counter medications for anxiety but I could be wrong. There are homeopathic mints called "Stress Mints" and they're supposed to calm you down, but I've never tried them.

Music helps me when I'm anxious and stressed. If you have an mp3 player, you can listen to it whenever you're starting to feel anxious and just de-stress for a while.
If you're at home and you hear a noise in the house or something that makes you nervous, try taking a warm shower. It can be really calming.

I hope I helped a little bit. If not, sorry! Take care.

Hi Cara.

There are a few homeopathic remedies for anxiety which are readily available, such as lemon balm, proloftin and bachs rescue remedy. I, personally, have used Bach's Rescue Remedy and it has seemed to help me slightly - though it may have only been like a placebo, i'm unsure. You may wish to ask your pharmacist for some suggestions, they will give you free assistance and may be able to recommend some things for you.
I would like to strongly recommend that you do try and see your doctor if possible, as this seems to be affecting your life but with the right treatment it can be helped.
