Underactive thyroid - July 27th 2024, 08:38 AM

This thread has been labeled as triggering by the original poster or by a Moderator. Please take this into consideration before continuing to read.

Recently I've been gaining weight when I don't eat a lot and I exercise 4/5 times a week (sometimes more), so I went and saw my doctor. After getting a blood test done, it came back that my thyroid is underactive as well as being insulin resistant. In two weeks, I have to go and get another blood test done to confirm if it is an underactive thyroid or if it was just a once off that my levels were not normal. Basically it appeared that I had some sort of infection in my system (which was surprising, considering that I've been feeling OK and not sick at all) which is why my doctor wants to wait, but after doing some research online, some of the symptoms I have been experiencing have been an indicator that it is my thyroid.
My question is, does anyone else experience an underactive thyroid? Or overactive one? What were your symptoms?

No, I never experienced it.
Do you tell it to your doctor? What he says?

I was diagnosed under active when I was 10. My doctor discovered it after I fainted in 5th grade lol. I honestly didn’t know I had any symptoms till I started taking the medicine for it, which is when I noticed I had fatigue, weight gain, mood imbalances, and difficulty focusing. They told me I’d have the issue the rest of my life and I’ve been on medicine ever since. I have to get lab work done every 6 months to a year to make sure my levels stay stable, but they do go up and down at random and aren’t always the same. As long as they stay under or over a certain amount though, it’s okay. Even if elevated a small amount over normal, my doctor is still happy with that.

We all possess resilience, we just need to realize it.

I've never been diagnosed with thyroid issues but I've always wondered about it. Have you been able to receive treatment for it since July?

Never have and Ive had it checked for overactive (am skinny with a lot of anxiety). How did it come back? With underactive, the treatment is very simple: take synthetic thyroid hormone (brand name Synthroid in the US).
