Vagina doctor - August 31st 2014, 11:42 AM

??? What do these doctors do, is it like a period doctor or something??? I've recently started my period, last year, and mum was telling her friend how she wants me to go to the "vagina doctor" to get me checked out? What do these doctors do? Because I hate to be asked questions about my period, I find it awkward, and I don't want someone poking their face around looking up there. Help?! Awkward?!

First of all; they are called gynaecologists.

Second of all, utilize this; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gynaecology

Third of all, best to toughen up and deal with the short-lived minutes of awkwardness than not go at all and find out something might be abnormal...then eventually you'd have to get it checked out.

That is absurd. Even the doctors in the US generally agree that girls under 18 don't need to go unless there's a serious problem or they are sexually active. Assuming neither of those apply to you, there is literally no reason you'd need to go.

Also stating the obvious, but you don't have to cooperate if you don't feel like it's appropriate or if you are uncomfortable with their plans. You shouldn't let yourself be pressured into doing something you don't want.

Hi there,

It seems kind of weird that your mum would want you to go just because you've started your period. I'm not sure what country you're from but in the UK you only tend to visit a gynaecologist if there's a problem or for routine checks like pap smears.

If she approaches you and tells you she wants you to go I'd just be honest with her and say you don't really want to and maybe ask why she feels that you should.

I hope this helped, take care

Re: Vagina doctor - August 31st 2014, 03:36 PM

I started going to the gynecologist since I was 14, but I was having a problem that needed to be checked out. I don't quite understand why your mom would want you to go unless you were having a health issue...either way, if she ends up taking you, request a female doctor. It'll take some of the awkwardness out of the situation I'm a very modest person, and the first time I went to the "vagina doctor" I started getting worked up and began to cry. I was 14. Afterwards, I realized it's not that bad. Explain how you're uncomfortable to your mom. Maybe she'll be able to request one of the better doctors who know how to deal with younger patients?
I hope this helps. If you end up going, get a female doctor.

Re: Vagina doctor - August 31st 2014, 05:15 PM

It's a gynaecologist lol... I think it's unusual your mom wants you to go though. You are supposed to go see a gyno when your 21, at least that's how it is in Canada. Then your supposed to get a pap every 3 years or if you get a new partner if can be every year.

I started going at 16 but even then the doctor didn't do anything. She just asked me if my period was regular and if I was sexually active. It can be an awkward conversation. But it's not like the doctors will report it. Then she will tell you that since you aren't sexually active she doesn't need to do any tests.

Some clinics require that you get a pap if you want birth control but I think that's only if you are already having sex. And because you are a minor they'd probably let it go.

Also, if anything is "wrong" you might need a pap. But they probably wouldn't do it the first time. They'd probably explain it because you're younger and would be reasonably uncomfortable.

I really don't think you need a gynaecologist though. Usually you start with your family doctor and then see the specialist (in this case the gyno) if there are things that your family doctor cannot address. I'd let your mom know you don't really want to go because nothing is wrong but if she persists ask to see the family doctor instead. If something needs to be addressed the family doctor can refer you b

I can only think that maybe your family has a history of uterine or ovarian cancer, and your Mum wants you to get checked out as soon as possible to prevent it from happening? Cancer can appear at any age, from childhood to older adults, so it's better to be safe than sorry.

Maybe it isn't even cancer, you need to talk to your Mum about this anyways. It's your body, you have the right to know why she wants you to go through this. Gynecologists don't typically examine girls until they're 18 or when they become sexually active.

Honestly, most gynecologists will probably tell your mom that there's no need for you to go yet. If you do end up going, then they'll probably just ask a few questions and that'll be it unless you're actually having a problem.
