American Dad (Anorexia)

Hey guyss.

So I have no idea if this is in the right place but I was watching an episode of American dad last night and I was quite horrified at it. I am not going to go in to to much detail or post a link to the episode on here because of how it might be triggering, but I am wondering if any of you have seen it, what you think of it. And if you have eating problems, did it affect you in any way?

Basically, the dad, Stan, develops Anorexia, but they get him to do sick things. And I was honestly shocked.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place :)

Jessie.

I actually kind of liked the episode. Of course, it's all dumb Family Guy type comedy, so you can't expect too much of a "lesson," but it did have a few really nice points. First and foremost, I was glad it was the guy who had the problem. Eating disorders are so often seen as a woman's disease, but 10% of sufferers are male. I also liked how they revealed Stan's POV. He had seen himself as getting bigger and bigger, and even suspected his family of messing with his vegetables, but then it turns around and shows you what he actually looks like rather than what he thought he did. I've been sifting through old photos lately, and it's shocking to realize I thought I was fat when I was that thin. The show got the BDD aspect down pat. They didn't do too much to showcase the fear, anxiety, and paranoia that come along with EDs, but for a comedy cartoon I think it did pretty well. I can't say if it actually triggered me or not, since I'm having a bit of a relapse right now anyway, but as I was watching I did think to myself "I don't want to want to look like that."

Sounds like the humour used in Family Guy. Try to ignore it, it's nothing personal to anyone suffering from this illness. I do get sensitive over how they speak of both BN & AN too, mind you.

I think it's pretty hilarious but keep in mind, it's not meant to offend. If it does, tough, cant please everyone so simply don't watch that episode then.

I have not seen it, but I will view it and respond with my comments after.

However, I would like to point out that no one here said anything about censorship or anything along those lines. So the "tough, don't watch it then" comments seem sort of rude and demeaning. The OP was simply asking about what other viewers thought of the episode. I personally wouldn't be so quick to be rude about that.

american dad and family guy do have very simmilar humor i've not seen this episode, but i have seen the simpsons episode where lisa had annorexia that was quite disturbing as they were making fun of it, when its not a joke at all, family guy makes jokes about theese sort of things too, theese programes do sometimes over step the line and offend people. i have been shocked by american dad in the past same with the simpsons and family guy.

I don't really watch American Dad so I haven't seen this one. I have however seen an episode of Family Guy where some guy teaches Meg how to be 'beautiful' by throwing up which I was actually pretty upset about. I guess as long as you don't take it too seriously it's not THAT bad. But sometimes it seems to go a bit OTT. :/

I personally enjoy the episode. It does poke fun at points of it (and I'm definitely not saying that it's not something to be taken seriously), but in the end you can tell that it's not meant to maliciously offend people with eating disorders. They end up showing legitimate concern and I feel that shows that, while some things are mocked (what isn't nowadays?), they show that it's a legitimate problem.

Re: American Dad (Anorexia)

I honestly thought it was kind of funny. Well, the side jokes about non relative things.
But the idea, and jokes about Anorexia was not funny to me. It was offensive.
They could have made it into more of an awareness thing, rather then passing it off as a joke.
