World Mental Health Day 2022

Hey everyone,

Let's talk about mental health. Today, 10th October, is World Mental Health Day and this year's theme is 'Making Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority'. Our mental health is impacted by so many things and with so much suffering in this world, it's important to make mental health a priority and normalise conversations surrounding it. If we can inspire one more person to talk, to open up or seek support through talking and being open ourselves, then that is great progress.

I recently learnt that there is actually 7 different types of rest. I was feeling tired all the time and no amount of sleep was helping; I was still waking up feeling exhausted. Sleep and rest are not the same thing and I wasn't getting enough of the other types of rest. Other than physical rest, there is also mental, sensory, creative, emotional, social, and spiritual rest. I'm still trying to find a balance and it will take time to discover what works best for me. Today, I would encourage you to check in with yourself: are you getting enough of each type of rest? If not, which type of rest do you think you need more of? Perhaps you might need more than one type of rest to help you feel truly rested and recharged.

Today and every day, mental health is intrinsic to our overall wellbeing. Check in on others, be kind to yourself and give yourself a chance to rest.

We're here if you need support.

I genuinely didn't realise that there were different types of rest!

Having a quick read online and I have been feeling stressed recently both socially and emotionally and I guess I need social and emotional rest!

Thank you for starting this thread...I've definitely learnt something today!

I know all about sleeping and rest due to sleep apnea. For sure think resting and getting enough sleep is important for your mental health!

This is really interesting! (Also interesting to note - after reading this I did some Google searching about how much rest people need, and all the results seemed to equate rest with sleep... no wonder so many of us didn't realise there were different types of rest then. :nosweat:) For me I think it's often not so much about needing more rest as it is needing to rest at the right time. I have a habit of withdrawing and overworking and just generally not having a good balance, and sometimes I misinterpret what my body/mind is telling me so I end up doing the opposite of what I need - avoiding people when what I really need is to be social for a bit, trying to get my brain to be quiet when it actually needs a solid workout, etc. So this thread has prompted me to be more mindful of whether I need rest or stimulation rather than just making assumptions. Thanks for sharing, and I hope it's inspired others to do some self-reflection as well!
