telling my story through a annonymous writing website.
Okay this might not make sense, but I will try to make it make sense.
So for a few months one of my friends who I was in high school with has been telling her story on a writing website that you can chose to use your real name on or use a username. My friend has chosen to use her real name which is fine, she's been telling her story on this writing website for a few months now and it's all about her time in foster care. And its made me think about doing similar - not so much the foster care bit because I was never in foster care - but I was in a supported living home for adults with disabilities and mental health.. and while I was there stuff like went down some of the staff there were narcissistic towards the residents etc and one staff member was sacked for being abusive. But the thing is before I lived in supported living I lived at home with my parents where there was alot of violence etc ... and in order to tell my story I would need to go into that on the website, and even though I am like using a username on said website, I worry that people would potentially know its me.. and I also don't want my friend to think I am copying her, but my friend has said on one of her Facebook status's how she's finding writing it helpful... which is why I kinda want to give it ago but like at the same time I don't know if it is a good idea because I don't want people to read it (like family etc) and they know its me and it cause a shitstorm, however I wouldn't be posting the link on my Facebook at all so its like only a slim chance it could be... but I don't know. I don't want my friend to find out and think I am copying her.. I have thought about messaging her and saying that she's inspired me to do the same.. but we haven't like had a proper conversation in years other than when we've like commented on each others Facebook posts so I am kinda like can I actually just message her out of the blue and be like 'hey I've been reading your story , and its inspired me to do similar and write about my childhood and my experiences in supported living' Supported living comes under adult social care but it isn't really a care home though some people do refer to some supported living programs as care homes. Also if I was to do this, (I've got a draft on said website but I haven't posted anything yet) I was kinda thinking of maybe posting the link here or if I do decide to do it maybe do it in the blog section I don't know. |
Re: telling my story through a annonymous writing website.
I think it's worth trying to write on this website, and if it doesn't work for you then at least you've tried. Writing things out can definitely be a huge help for a lot of people.
If you're worried about people finding out maybe you can start out by removing identifying information that could hint at it being you. For example, you can say the country you live in since there's loads of people that live there, but maybe until you get more comfortable you can avoid using the city name, especially if it's a small city. If there's details that need to be included to make the story understandable, you can try to be vague (such as saying "I live in a city near the woods/ocean/etc.")'. Since you're worried I'd definitely also use a different username or a fake name that you haven't mentioned anywhere before. I don't think your friend will think you're copying her if she finds out, but if she does send her a message you can say that you saw her post saying writing has helped her and you found it inspiring so you thought you'd give it a go too. Sharing the website here is fine as long as the sole purpose of your post isn't to advertise the website, the website isn't a competitor of ours, and you use the appropriate trigger warnings when sharing it. |
