To the siblings of somene with a disability -
June 2nd 2013, 07:57 PM
I know some of you have a sibling with a disability, and I thought this could be a place where we could vent about it. I want to tell you guys some things about my brother that I don't generally tell people, because they don't understand.
My brother has an obsession with dumping things. Anything that is liquid (especially soap) he will dump. We hide all of our drinks and shampoos in lock boxes. This one time, he dumped oil on the floor and when we woke up, it was like we were ice skating.
My brother also stays up all night, and sometimes he takes all the contents out of the fridge and eats them.
My family hasn't been to a restaurant in about six years (together as a family.)
He always walks around the house naked, and he has done so outside, too.
He has gone missing several times.
Anyway, I figured this could be a daily thing where you could post something that your sibling did, that annoyed you or that was funny of what ever you'd like to talk about.
Today, he managed to throw soda on our freshly painted ceilings, and it's all over the shower curtains because he always takes a bath.
Your turn.

Good idea for a thread!
My 11-year-old brother has severe Asperger's, and he often develops intense interests in some strange things. Like, for example, he watches videos of certain young kids' TV shows over and over again on YouTube. His current obsession is Lazytown, he was dancing around to some song from it earlier. It was kinda annoying because he made a racket, yet pretty funny.

Thanks!
My brother does that, too. He watches Elmo, and PBS Sprout a lot. He loves to look up the theme songs on YouTube.

Ah, my brother looks up some of the theme songs in foreign languages. They're actually hilarious to listen to.

So does mine! Our brother's are a lot alike! Some things are really funny coming fro him compared to someone typically developing. Once, one of my classmates was annoying him (we worked in their class for one class period a day) And he told her to shut the f up. I busted out laughing.

Ohh, I thought this was about physical disabilities not mental ones. I don't have many experiences with that in my close family but it's interesting to read your stories.

I'd say it applies to both physical and mental disabilities, it wasn't stated otherwise.

It can be for physical ones, too
This one time, we were at the dollar store sometime around Christmas. And a song about Jesus came on. And he starts screaming, "Jesus, Jesus Christ!" People were staring and we had to quickly shush him and leave the store.
A few weeks ago, he asked me for my grape juice. Knowing that he was only going to dump it, I said no. He left the room and came back and he says, "Give me the fucking grape juice." ::
We think he has trouble feeling. In the winter he'll wear a bathing suit and in the summer he'll wear a jacket. And as I'm typing this, he's on our swing set in the pouring rain.

Feels so good to know other people have siblings like this.
One of my brothers is autistic. And he has some other things too, but I can't remember them.
He loves to burn holes in our carpet . . . which annoys the heck out of everyone and we've had to hide anything potentially hot.
He likes to walk around naked. He doesn't go outside, but it's really annoying, because well, he's naked. He doesn't understand that you just can't do that (he's 15, so it's not like he's too young to know better)
He doesn't know when to stop, either. Like if someone was having a bad day, he will do anything within his power to make it worse. I used to think he was doing it on purpose, but apparently his brain doesn't tell him when to quit being a douche.
He also can't read people. Like if I was having a good day and was perfectly fine, he would ask me (serious face out) what was wrong. I would say nothing politely, and he would reply with "why are you angry with me? What did I do?" It's too hard explaining to him that I'm not angry with him, so I just leave. Like today.

Definitely
I wonder if that's some sort of sensory issue. If my brother isn't walking around naked, he'll go commando. He also likes to wear cotton shirts; he hates polo's.

One time my brother who has ADHD and aggressive behavior was dancing to the Bob The Builder theme song. It was funny and cute at the same time. And today's his birthday. He's now 7 years old.

Aw, how sweet! Well happy birthday to your brother!
Today, my brother stayed home from school. He had a bad day yesterday and literally ripped his shirt off. But whenever he hits you or something he'll either go, "Don't hit" "Be Nice" or "I'm Sorry!!" and then he goes back to hitting you again.

Thank you. His party is this Saturday so i'm really excited to see him again.
When my brother hits, we have to hold him because he's too aggressive. He hits, spits, throws things, and breaks things. When he does these things, he doesn't realize that he's doing it. He gets mad over the littlest things.
Like this one time, he was in school and his class was drawling a picture but i don't know what it was and he got upset and had a meltdown because the other kids were doing it and he didn't know how to do it. I talked to him about it.

I don't have any siblings with a disability but it's cool and interesting reading all your stories.
I can relate to watching cartoons and having obsessions because i have that too
Last week I couldn't stop singing "we're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oz" my family gets annoyed :P
This week I watched the unbirthday song soo many times.
My sister found me playing with dolls the other day. (I'm 19 ) she says I'm funny and but weird. :P
My high school physics teacher is very hard to deal with during an exam. He paces back and forth and that makes me nervous. One time before the exam I came a bit early and saw walking all around the classroom, erasing the boards/fixing chairs and singing "I'm off my meds, I'm off my meds" Not sure what that was about.

Do you ever feel like your sibling is your responsibility VS your parents?

Hey there,
I would just like to say that I think this is a great idea for a thread. You are definitely stepping outside of the box and creating a community for people to come and share their opinions on this issue. I highly recommend this. It's good to just vent sometimes to people who will listen.
If any of you do want to talk, feel free to message me!
Are you having a tough day or night? Then do this, place your hand over your heart. Feel that? That's called purpose. You're alive for a reason. Don't give up.
