Cutting In College??? -
November 3rd 2010, 06:45 PM
So my thereapist told me that no college is gonna want me due to my cutting. yes I know this but its not like im going to walk up to them and be like "Hey i like to cut myself" Is it possible to continue cutting myself and still go to college. I know the right thing to do is to STOP all together but I just cant do that. Im just not ready for that. Is it possible to just do the same thing that I do in high school???

Yes, you can stop. And you should. Truthfully, I have no idea what cutting has to do with being accepted to college, but you should look into counseling. Talk to someone, and try to stop cutting.

Yes you should stop... but a college isn't going to know that you cut yourself unless you tell them.

Why not use college as a motivation to stop cutting? That's what I did and it's worked perfectly. Kinda surprising. You can use counseling services at the college, too, for support and help. It's really a great time to make big changes in your life. You get to start fresh!

Colleges won't turn you away if you self harm, it's not like it's on the application form. They won't ask you and you won't have to tell anyone. But you should definitely get help with this. Self harming is a big issue, and you shouldn't allow it to take over your life and hold you back from progressing with things.
Obviously, you could still self harm in college, there's no 'rule' against it. But with whatever situation, self harm is never the answer and you need to get help to focus on stopping.
Take care.

when i enroled on my college course there was a question about mental health the question was something like ' do you have any mental health problems such as self harm, or an eating disorder' i put ' No' as the answer to the question - its not so much lieing, its more just not wanting people such as tutors to know as such, but no college can turn you away because you self harm - if your college knows that you self harm , they can help by getting someone for you talk to.

In addition I would think about finding another therapist. Not only is what she/he said not true, it's completely unhelpful and unsupportive.

As far as I know, no university of college is going to turn you away from self harm. The university I go to actually has a TWLOHA organization, and there are a lot of people to help you with such issues. I would not recommend, however, continuing self harming in college. Like someone else said, why don't you use college as a motivation to stop harming yourself? For me, university was a very different experience than high school at first, and therefore more stressful. It's better if you have more positive way to handle this stress than negative ones.

Thanx everyone for the positive feedback. It was really bugging me out that this one thing could stop my future in colleges/universities. I dont think I am able to quit though I just dont see a way for that to work. I can tell myself that im going to stop for college but then im going to procrastinate it like i'll say "i can start that next semester or at prom or the end of the year" but then i just keep pushing it back farther and farther till i forget that i was even trying to quit.

There's no reason that you can't quit. Anybody can quit if they want to. I cut for 5 years, and I quit. You should look into seeing a therapist, it might help
