My parents found out, not good - October 24th 2024, 05:00 PM

Hi
Im currently in school, and some of my friends sh. My gf does it, and my best friend. I started doing it, and i dont know why. I would get angry sometimes and start scratching myself until my skin came off, or digging scissors into my skin. They left marks, and i was proud of them. I was horrified, i kept asking why i was doing this to myself but i never stopped, i just couldn't. However, my friends helped me. We both helped each other and it worked, i stopped sh, and they did too. My mum found out because i was doing work and my sleeve slipped up a little. She got so scared and she yelled at me to roll up my sleeves. I was so scared, i'd never seen my mum like that. I showed her my arms and she got so mad, and she called my dad home. She took my phone and went through all my texts. She saw the ones with my bsf and my gf, and thought they were influencing me. I tried to tell her they weren't, but she wasn't listening. She cut off all my contact with them, she didn't even let me say anything. I'm in the holidays and im worried. What if they start doing it again? Idk what to do.

Hey,

Even though your parents found out, I'm glad you stopped self harming. That is something huge that you should be proud of, and so should your friends. I started after my friend started self harming too because it was "helping" her, even though that's truly not the case. It then became an addiction from there, so I get what you mean.

You can't control your friends' actions though, so if they do start self harming again it is not your fault. It's important that everyone involved has coping mechanisms outside of relying on another person in case something happens where you can't get in touch with that friend.

Here are alternatives you can use if you start to get the urge to self harm again. Maybe once you get back to school after holiday you can share it with your friends if you see them at lunch or in class.

I hope things look up for you!

Take care,
Dez

Hi there, it's been a couple months since you created this thread and I hope you've been able to get back in touch with your friends. I think it's important to remember that while you care about your friends, the actions they take is ultimately up to them. You can talk to them, offer them support and advice or alternatives to self-harm, but only they can choose to stop doing it to themselves. It's a hard truth to hear, I know and especially when it's people you really care about; but you can only control yourself.

I'm glad you were able to stop self-harming and hope you haven't relapsed since then. Also, remember this: your parents really care about you. You're their child, they love you, they helped bring you on this planet. If you feel they are being too harsh on you, communicate that with them calmly. If they continue to be verbally abusive, then that's on them and not on you. Remember, you can only control your action and not the action of others.

Wishing you all the best.
