Do you mean depression in the clinical sense, or feeling down for a period of time? I think depending on what you mean, the answers will differ quite considerably!

I agree that there's a huge difference between clinical depression that's been diagnosed by a professional and just feeling depressed. There's also something called situational depression.

Personally I have been diagnosed with BPD and Depressive episodes (plus more but these two cause me to be depressed at times) so I guess part of it is a chemical imbalance in my brain but also things about the past make me feel depressed and really low.
